Newbie question 1973 K2?
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:46:01 PM »
I just bought a 1973 CB750.  Or at least the title says 1973.  Let's see what you guys think.  The bikes build date is 6/72 frame number is 20****, engine number is 20****, the bike's original color is flake sunrise orange with the black stripes, and even the owners manual is still with the bike and it says 1972.  Could it be that the DMV screwed up the title?  Or could this bike possibly be a non-US K2?  What type of frame / engine numbers do a '73 non-US bike have?  How about '73 non-US paint schemes?  This whole thing is just really bugging me.  Not that this stuff really should matter much because I love the bike.  I am just curious so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, lance ???

It's quite possible that a build date of 6/72 was first registered in 1973.  I had a '77 550 with a "V" plate (that's 1980) registration.

As Breezy says.  Give us the whole VIN and engine number and we can confirm the dates/model.

It's a 72.  A K2.   73's had numbers beginning with 2200001.

Maybe it didn't sell until 73?

Pretty much everywhere in the world apart from the US (well, Europe, Britain and Oz at least, maybe Canada too?) never got the K3-K5, so you could still buy a new K2 here in 1975.

The engine numbers and frame numbers for non US bikes would be similar to the numbers for the US bikes made for that year, i.e., K3 (US) numbers would be similar to those of a 1973 K2 in Oz, Europe or Britain. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The frame number is #2054974 and engine is #2047033.  If the bike was first registered in '73 the title shouldn't say its a '73 if its really a '72 bike? Hope this helps. ???

my frame number is: 1099326. I always thought my bike was a 72 but could it be a 71? My title says the bike was sold in 1971 but the year model is 1972.  ???

That's it mate, I couldn't work out why my CB750 kept leaking oil, but when I looked closer, I realised that it's actually a Triumph Bonneville? Weird............. ;D

Only, if you live in a country outside of the US.

American model serial numbers are specified quite clearly in the "Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide" from American Honda motor company.  That's the book where I got the numbers I posted.

Apparently, other countries got US discards or factory seconds.   (snicker) ;D

Now Now two tired, we did not get castofs, Just Honda arsing about with the numbers to confuse us. Also until about 76 only USA had the Vin plates as only they were paranoid about thigs conforming to "rules" applicable on date of manufacture!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Nah TT, it was something to do with the US public apparently wanting a "new" model every year, so Honda just did a different paint job and a few different color schemes each year to make 'em happy.

The rest of the world got the same mechanical changes, and even got a light switch so they could turn their lights on and off, unlike the US' "child-proof" models, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

;) tell - you must be gett'n old, mate!

i was riffing off of your comment referring to the US obsession with "child-proofing" everything under the sun...

if a sun deck on the back of your house is taller that two stairs there must be a guardrail around the whole thing - keeps off the lawyers, see???

take is easy, man...i'm beginning to worry about you.

Oh, ok mate, I'm with you now, I don't read enough American newspapers to have known about the guard rail thing, sorry about that, I'm sure the rest of the guys understood. Cheers, Terry. ;D
