Topic: Question about the float needle

On my bike...the float needle isnt held by anything...it just stands on it's tail and the tip fits loosely in the seat above...is this correct? The tab always on the float is always touching the spring

You can adjust how far it hangs down there is a tab that hits the float post. Sounds like you have non pd carbs and yes on those there is no clip for the valve.

Just remember, you can still get fluids into the bowl with "just the tip."  Abstinence is the only sure way.
