smoking wiring.....
« on: May 02, 2013, 03:03:25 PM »
I have a '73 cb500/4. This morning I rode to work. After work I came out and put my key in and noticed that i had taken it out in the "up" position. I'm not sure what that does. Normal off is down. So I turn it to the middle and notice my battery is dead. The starter wont start and the head light is out. So I ask and get a boost. So i take the seat off ,we connect everything. I turn my bike on and notice the green light is on so I try to start it and she wont go. But then I notice there is smoke coming from the wiring that is under the left panel. I unhooked everything and start looking and I see some of the insulation is burned off some of the wiring. The wiring seem to be coming from a box that is on the bottom right of that panel. I will take a picture when I get her home. I didn't have long to inspect, I had to take a ride home. I was thinking that its my fault and I should of just let the battery get enough charge in it that I could disconnect the boost and kick her over. Any thoughts on what it might be and and what I should do would be greatly appreciated.   This is her.......

I think you may have hooked the jumper cables up back ass wards :o :o. But that has nothing to do with the original problem. If that is what happened you will need to look at possible damage to your rectifier. When you get it home take the battery out of the bike and charge it up over night.
