first gear lash - cb550
« on: May 02, 2013, 08:08:35 AM »
Recently rebuilt a cb550. Did not know its condition when I got it. I have had the cses apart, nothing jumped out as worn, actually everthing showed no wear at all (8k miles on odometer).

Have put about 200 miles on the new motor and have notice a wierd lash in first gear once the clutch is let out. Nothing major but noticable. I did not replace the clutch and am wondering if its just a clutch issue or something else.

Its hard to describe, but once you let the clutch out from a standstill, there be a light thud and lash like slack is being taken up....Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks
Ben

How's the tension on your drive chain?

Drive chain tension is ok. Relatively new chain and sprockets.

Or do you mean the hy-vo primary chain?

Noticed issue is more pronounced once fully warmed up.

these aint like newer bikes,,sometimes you have to live with how they are, they do have more lash than new bikes,be sure as gordon posted your chain is adjusted correctly, theyll all be fifty years old shortly!

I have the same issue with my '76 550. It's annoying, but I think I've gotten used to it at this point. I used to think I wasn't getting the perfect combination of throttle and clutch release and that it was operator error, but it seems to do it no matter how smoothly I transition. Kind of glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing it.

I too recently replaced my chain and sprockets and have tightened the chain slack since breaking it in. Still "lash"-ing a bit, though. It's almost like something catches and it jumps forward every so slightly, for me, at least. Mine doesn't happen immediately from a standstill but closer to around 3000-4000 RPMs, once the clutch lever has been fully released.

How do you check the cush drive anyway?  Is there some sort of test you do.  I l'd like to know I think mine may be worn on my 750.

DUDE!!! You are in Los Alamos, CA?? Join the relay!!! It will be near you on 5-25. Look at the sign-up list sticky at the top of this page for more info. We used to skate-board at a concrete drainage there dubbed the LA Bowl. ;D
