Rims and tires oh my!
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:00:11 PM »
Hey guys!

I'm in the hunt for a couple rims for my CB750 build. The front wheel is off a early 350 twin (1.60x18 36 spoke) and the rear is a stock 750 (1.85x18 40 spoke i believe). The rims I have are terribly rusted and need to be replaced.

My questions is: Can i pick different width rims and still fit the same tire? for example, get a 1.85x18 front rim as opposed to 1.60x18.

Thanks!

Yes.

In fact I think you would be better off with a wider rim on a 750, which is much larger and heavier than a 350 twin.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I would need special order spokes then...??

It depends. Are you planning on using the hub and disk setup from the stock 19" front? Then yes, you would need to order spokes.

Is there a particular reason why you want to use an 18" front? Used stock 19's aren't hard to come by.

I really like the look of a front drum and it cleans up the handlebars. 750 prototypes had a front drum..but I'm digressing here. I would have preferred to lace it to a stock 19 but I already picked up a tire (BT45's) during a moment of impulse. I'm definitely creating more work for myself!

I would have thought the Commando satisfied your need for a 750 with marginal brakes  :o.

Buchanan Spokes should be able to hook you up although theoretically you could reuse the spokes from your existing wheel as long as they are in decent condition. If cost isn't an issue though, I would order new spokes.

Hey Jay,

thanks so much for the offer! I picked up one today locally from a friend that should work.

Cheers

Does anyone know if spokes are interchangeable between WM1, WM2, WM3? That's assuming the same spoke count and diameter. I'm thinking I may be better off with a wider (WM2) rim for the front wheel.

Thanks
