Chronic heartburn
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:00:26 PM »
I have suffered from chronic heartburn/acid reflux since I was about 10-11 years old. The family doctor gave me handfuls of Rolaids, and put me on a bland diet. In the early 90's, I was prescribed Prilosec, before it was available OTC. Nothing really worked.
I've only had lasting relief in the last few years, after seeing something on TV about how the sphincter that closes off the stomach was triggered by acid, and some cases of reflux were due to a lack of stomach acid, in which case antacids/blockers would make symptoms worse. It was suggested to drink vinegar when symptoms occurred. I tried it; drank a shot glass of apple cider vinegar (Nasty!!!), and about 15-20 minutes later let out a very satisfying and pain relieving belch. ;D  Your mileage may vary, but it's worth a try...

I lived with the pain of reflux through the best years of my life. For about the last 15 years I've been taking Somec every day, bloody wonderful. It reduces the amount of acid produced and I have no burn any more and can eat anything.

I have reflux without ever having heartburn. Only figured it out when I thought I had a pallup on my vocal chord...not a pallup, it was the acid basicly creating a sore. Best for me was smaller meals, lots of water. Being that I sing quite a bit in my band I can tell before I have any pain. Also, if you find yourself having to clear your throat all the time...it's probably reflux.  I've also found I can relielve the symptoms by eating a apple..

I've heard of the vinegar trick! Guy I know mixes apple cider vinegar with honey to make it go down easier.

My wife suffers with acid reflux and read about the vinegar trick, we have a bottle in the frig. She's changed diet, reduced red wine intake [white instead!] and eats smaller meals. She also recently had her gall bladder removed and that has helped as well.
She doesn't like the taste of the vinegar either.
