78' 550K Intake manifold and boots seem too long.
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:35:48 AM »
First and foremost, a big thank you to everyone here at the sohc4 forums.  I've been a lurker here for some time, and generally dont get involved as I... a) generally don't have any answers, and b) usually find the ones I need without asking.  So far, this has got me to this point:

When I bought it, the previous owner had it disassembled from the jugs on up.  I've done a lot to get here, including my 20/1000ths bore with new pistons, all new gaskets, and some half-assed cleaning and polishing along the way.  She's not exactly aesthetically pleasing, but it's FINALLY warm here, and I can't wait any longer.  (The 8th motorcycle just went down my street, lucky bastard!)  So I'll put all that off 'til next winter.

So here's my current dilemma...

After mounting the carbs and air plenum in place (and from what I've collected here, we all know what a pleasure that is) I couldn't get the airbox to sit right.  I would try to tighten the plenum and airbox into place, but it seemed like everything was either excessively stretching or compressing.  Upon further examination I discovered this gap, and it seems a bit outside the range of normal.

It doesn't seem like much but it's keeping everything from fitting properly.  I have everything from the plenum to the manifold tightened down and pushed together as tight as possible.

Now here's where I think I made a wrong turn.  When I went to mount the carburetors I was forced to make a choice.  The box of parts that came with the bike had two sets of intake manifolds, each with their own boots.  I chose the ones that appeared to be the right ones when I cross compared them to pictures I'd see online, but I fear I've chosen... poorly. (read that in the voice of that Templar Knight from Raiders of the Lost Ark if you'd like)

The ones I chose were labeled as such:

Here as the ones I did not choose.  NOTE:  These ones do not have the small screw seen in the installed picture above.

When I compare the two, I'd say the ones I chose are about 5mm longer than the A-1/B-1 set.  Furthermore, the boots that matched were longer as well, and also by a few MM.

Which seems to about the gap I'm dealing with on the back end.  So, did I screw up?  Should I switch to the A-1/B-1 instead of the A-7/B-8?  I couldn't find any information on intake manifolds and what these numbers mean, also, what is the significance of that little screw?  I'm in new territory here, any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

yes you have the wrong manifolds fitted, the small screw is where the vacuum gauges fit when setting carbs. on the k3/k4 PD carbs the take off for gauges is on the carb body. swapping them over should solve your problem.

That makes a lot of sense.  I see exactly what you're talking about.  Guess I'll be swapping those out, Arg!

Thanks!
