Installing Dyna S....
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:11:34 PM »
Guys,

My new Dyna S ignition arrived today.  Now, hopefully I'll be running on all four cylinders!  I need to remove the old Dyna S ignition with the fried power module and install the new one. I don't have a 12 volt test light to check the timing, but I want to pick one up tonight.  Can you make your own 12 volt test light?  Anyway, any advice on the installation is welcome.

Later,

I used my rear indicator lamp connected to the power feed wires for the coil, unplug the coil and plug the lamp in the socket and just place the chrome part of the lamp on some bare metal.

The only problem with using a 12v test light to set the timing on the Dyna-S is that you need to set it at full advance, not at the "F" mark like with the stock points.  For this you need a strobe timing light.

Bollocks fella..... You set Dyna at the advance point and fine tune with a strobe as stated in the instructions.

you can set the dyna-s at full advance by holding it there manually, as stated in the instructions.

i made a 12v test light years ago and i still use it. i used a dome light bulb. it's shaped like a big glass fuse, tubular with a conductor at each end. i  soldered wires to each end, then crimped on alligator clips.

in a pinch, i have used a multimeter set to read dc voltage and watched for the needle to move for the timing. it's harder to see than a bright light, but it got it done accurately.

and yes, i will second that holding the advancer open works very well, and is accurate. i have used this method and rechecked with a strobe light and found it to be correct.

my only other advice on the dyna would be that the wire tap they supply for the 12v power is not too reliable. it will work if you are careful, but ive had them come open and loose connection is various applications before. i dont trust them. if you have an easy way to splice it in better i would do it. if you use the tap, you may want to zip tie it shut or at least put electrical tape around it so it dosent open up. that has worked out well for me before.
