Combo RR wiring issue (cb750k4)
« on: May 07, 2013, 06:10:53 PM »
I recently purchased a new combo rectifier regulator  (3-phase field excited) for my 1974 cb750 k4. I purchased the unit in the belief that the stock regulator was no longer functioning. Turned out that the real issue was a broken wire from the field coil. In any event, I ran into an issue wiring up the new unit which by the way had the correct number of coloured wires. Field coil and stator wires hooked up with no issue. The regulator on the other hand gave me some trouble. When i paired the GREEN, BLACK, AND WHITE wires, my Neutral and Oil indicator LEDs would light up despite the key being turned to the off position. STUPID me... i assumed that the black and white wires were miss-coloured and I went ahead and swapped them (no more LEDs lighting up when they shouldn't). So over the last week, my new battery has been draining and the bike does not turn off when the key is switched to the off position.

So, obviously the issue is not that the black and white wires are miss coloured. I re-installed the old regulator and all is fine. But when i try the new combo unit I get the LEDs lighting up when the bike is off. What could be wrong here??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You may have fried the unit.  It is solid state and they don't fair well to switched polarity.
