serious clutch issue "STILL!" Help!
« on: May 06, 2013, 01:59:49 PM »
Ok, so I just finished my bike. Took her out for a shakedown run. no issues. Went 25 miles to the next town, ate some lunch, fired her up and went over to a buddies house to rub in the fact that mine was complete and his wasn't. pulled in my clutch lever, and bam, right there in his driveway my case broke. it seems to have broke under the pressure of the clutch actuator? I don't know. anyone have an Idea why this happened. i'm going to replace it (obviously) but I would be double mad if it did it again....

Don't usually/ever see that happening.   I wouldn't worry about it happening again.

You have the correct number of steels & plates in there ?

You didn't notice any horrible vibrations in the motor did you ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I fought with the number of steels/plates all winter. Finally got it right. Everything else was smooth. No issues. Then as i went to stop in my buddies driveway i pulled in my lever, felt a little resistence then boom.

Though I don't think it was a tightening procedure issue, from what I have seen it looks like a different failure but here are some good threads I dredged up for you

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=106700.0

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=37507.0

First two prob aren't too much help directly but maybe indirectly glean some info from it.

The third link this guy broke the cover just like you so I would read through the whole shebang. Has to do with clutch plates, thickness, springs, all types of good stuff. He resolves it at the end too

Ordered a new cover today. Waiting for it to show up. Still cant figure out what happened. The best i can recall is when i took off the cover after it had tried to blow open, i did not find nut lock nut on tge actuator. Lets say that it vibrated off. Ive got another picture of the basket ill post tonite, but could that have anything to do with it. Wouldnt my clutch lever just be out of adjustment? What would cause lever resistence, enough to try and force my actuator out of the case.

SO i got the bike home today from my buddies house. Inspected my clutch basket a little better, this is what I saw. Then I noticed that I had some freeplay in the basket. I could grab it and pull it out and in a little. maybe a 1/8th inch. removed my springs and fount that the basket nut had backed off. I set the retainer, at least I am pretty sure I did. so when it backed out, it allowed the clutch basket to move outboard, maybe jump a tooth so when I pulled in the lever it met full resistance? Just speculating. I am going to inspect whats there, wait for the new parts, and give her another try.

BARF!

no offense, sorry. I'm not an XD fan. GLOCKs, XDs, and the like are not my thing. but at least you got a gun so thats what counts. Seriously, I didn't intend to offend you, just not a fan.

That in my avatar is my Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag... just one of my babies. I actually named my First born son after that gun, no kidding...

I hope you enjoy that XD though. A lot of people do.

IT had to be something like that. I've never seen that kind of damage from any of the run of the mill clutch problems. Usually you can't get the thing together or working at all if everything isn't right. Yours probably was all right, then that nut backed off.

None taken. I read lots of negative stuff on the XD but the reviews on the xdm where all positive. I didnt care for the glock19 or the s&w shield or s&p . I liked the 19 rd magazines

Once this cover comes in i am going to give it anothe shot. Once I got it all apart and looked at that i am confident that my problem was that nut. Is thread locker ok for right tgere or would it make tgat nut impossible to remove later?

My beretta holds 17. Even 15 rouds suits me. Id trade the mag capacity for overal weapon function any day

Given what happened to you I would use the gentlest thread locker. I wanna say there is a green one that is a softer touch than the blue, but I could be wrong. Either way don't use the red

Right. Keep in mind there are many thousands running around without threadlocker. Meaning a proper assembly, torque on the nut and setting the lock tab, should be enough.

Agree with Ron,  I have never used anything other than proper assembly and torque.   The loose clutch hub nut could easily cause that damage...Larry

I don't use it either but I should have phrased the response better. I meant "if" he uses it then use the one with the weakest bond strength
