I may be late to the party. I did this exact thing. Busted my plate too. If the adjuster jam nut gets loose it can do that. The actuater gets out of whack and bam! Busted plate. Replace the actuater and coresponding cover. Adjust it right and make sure to tighten that jam nut.

SO i got the bike home today from my buddies house. Inspected my clutch basket a little better, this is what I saw. Then I noticed that I had some freeplay in the basket. I could grab it and pull it out and in a little. maybe a 1/8th inch. removed my springs and fount that the basket nut had backed off. I set the retainer, at least I am pretty sure I did. so when it backed out, it allowed the clutch basket to move outboard, maybe jump a tooth so when I pulled in the lever it met full resistance? Just speculating. I am going to inspect whats there, wait for the new parts, and give her another try.
Why is there a bolt missing from the lifter plate?

You better not put it back together until you remove that clutch pressure plate and get another one. That is what caused the problem.
See that broken off ear?

There is a trick to getting that plate back on the right way.
What you have to do is keep turning the bolts a little at a time and KEEP tapping on the plate the whole time so that it stays lined op on the little notches on the back of the plate.
MANY MANY people have broken those plates during installation.

That bolt stripped out. The plate ears were cracked already, i thought i could get away with it ( stupid). I got new parts on the way. Proof possitive that shortcuts will cost more in the long run

Got my cover in and installed. Now the bike wont roll in gear when i pull in the clutch. Adjusted as much as i could. Still wont roll. Pulled out tge plates and inspected tgem. One was warped. Figured ok, that could cause pressure keeping it from rolling with tge lever engaged. Checked the rest they are fine. Installed a new plate i had, tried again, same deal. Wtf. Now what. Pulled apart, tried again. Same deal. Wtf again. At it all day, same results. Lots of questions.

1. How tight should the jam nut be?
2. Would stacking plates affect this?

My setup is fmfmfdfmfmfmf
F fiber
M metal
D double plate

3. Springs?

Not positive but I think the double plate is on F models. Did you compare you first set up with the new one? Is the cover the same as the busted one?

cover is the same and that plate was there when I disassembled it. only difference is there was a plate that looked like a fiber plate but had no corks on it. (external teeth) it would not fit with my new plates because the overall stack height with new plates was too thick with it. so i removed that. but it ran fine without it until i broke the old case.
