77cb550f dual caliper mount

what parts (right caliper, mount, hub) will work on the unused stock holes in the right side lower fork. if nothing then what is the purpose of it being there?

bog standard caliper, caliper arm, caliper mounting brackets and hub . Search for dual discs and you'll find plenty info

Would it not be better to replace the master cylinder with one with a bigger plunger for the dual brakes?

I am not sure of the measurement, but again, do a search for Dual Disc Conversion and all the info is in here.

I have not done it yet, but the modification for the Speedo Drive plate is not that difficult, and once you have it all apart, it becomes obvious what needs to be done.

goldwing gl1000 master cylinder is the one people generally use. Oh yeah and you'll need longer disc bolts ... again goldwing ones do the job.

I thought the lever ended up too "wooden" feeling with the stock 14mm?  I may be wrong, though.

I just finished up a dual disk setup on my 500. I initially ran modern Nissan 14mm master then switched to the same thing but in 5/8ths. The 14mm had a better and more progressive feel but I could squeeze it hard enough to were it would touch the bars. The 5/8ths has a more wooden and less proggresive feel but it will not contact the bars. If they made a master cylinder sized right in the middle I think it would be perfect.

I ran the Nissan 14mm for a while with just a single disc and it was an improvement over the stock unit.

I happen to have a front fork assembly with caliper and bracket in good shape on it in my garage. rotor is a 4 bolt though so hopefully I can dig up the rotor that came on this 500 frame

I had a pretty pain free time doing mine. I was able to sand down(bench grinder) the bottom tab of the caliper bracket to were it mounted up perfectly without the need for shims. The only down side is you'll have to take off one side of the the brakes to remove your wheel now.

I think you have the mudguard bolted to the inside of the caliper swing arm. It should be on the outside. From your pics I can see that the brake pad is not contacting the disk and will wear at an angle. Also the brakes will not work properly until the pads wear down to compensate for the offset caused by misalignment.

cheers for worrying about me The P  ;D.  The pictures show the right hand side, ie the side with the extra caliper added.  On the standard left handside the mudguard bracket does sit on top of the pivot arm bracket right enough. On the right handside the mudguard of course bolts straight onto fork casing when a second disc isnt added. You are right, I have the mudguard bracket mounted between the fork leg and the upper pivot arm bracket. With this arrangement I have it set up with a uniform 0.006 inch clearance between the inner pad and the disc with the mudguard bracket between the fork leg and the caliper arm bracket. ... either the photo was taken before I was finished tweaking or the photo doesnt have good persective to show the true alignment (photo was taken when forks were still on the workbench) ...right enough its not back on the road yet ... time will tell ;)
Another wee issue is that the speedo cable rubs of the the new disc, so a wee adition needed to hold it off the disk. Also added a grease nipples to each caliper arms pivot

Cant say it was all straight forward ... but that was mostly ddue to the mongrel basket of parts I used. Pain and agony recorded here: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=5571.15

I ran longer 750 forks with twin discs on my 500 for a bit- the standard master cylinder worked fine, no problems- braking seemed a little better though prob just psycological. I converted back to single disc to save money on rebuilding and replacing hoses costs and to make wheel removal easy again, but mainly because I wanted to go back to the standard length 500/550 forks which in Australia never seem to have the extra lugs needed for the extra caliper.

i'm also using the bog standard master cylinder with dual discs on my 550. works fine, definitely can be done.

but the real question would be: does anyone have direct experience comparing the bog stadard with a different cylinder, with dual discs?

Bleed- did you locate a 500 rotor after all? If not, I've got one hanging in my shed in awfully good condition. In fact, I think I may even have powder coated the center to black. I ended up installing a different one that I had milled for and this is a spare from my 500 GSXR build.

haven't found one yet. I actually think that the parts bike had the caliper and rotor removed. dad doesn't remember removing it but that was like a year ago and hes 60 now lol

I've definitely got a perfectly good one. Yours if you want it. PM an address and I'll drop it in the Post Monday. It's not power coated center, but you can paint or PC as you wish. Surface is good, not worn or grooved.
