I've got a manual pick-up and wouldn't trade it for anything. It makes driving a little more fun.

I too find myself looking for the clutch in automatics...good ole muscle memory.

I don't know if it's universal, but I have had some guys dissappointed that i drived a stick, they seemed to think that i would be impressed by their manliness for driving a manual.

my last manual was a 79 pontiac trans am with one of the last REAL pontiac 400's. I miss it :'(

My brother-in-law had a 78' Black Pontiac T/A that was a good looking car and would haul the mail (or anything else).     Around August of 1970, I was stationed at Hamilton AFB, CA and was coming west from Vallejo and was politely passed by a new white with the blue stripe T/A (455) and we played a swapping game passing each other until we were running a little over 120 (my Petty Blue 69' road runner w/335hp 383, I knew it was no match for the 455) and he pulled up beside me and looked like he said something like "I Gotta Go" & He Did! That was one fine running  Pouncho!   Later on, Bill

I did that yesterday. I did some car swapping with one of my friends and damned if I didn't jam the brake down while going about 40. Thank god I didn't have anyone behind me!

5 speed Manual - 2002 Subaru WRX.  Before that, 5 speed Manual 1995 Jeep Cherokee.

When I drive my wife's 2004 Mazda Tribute (automatic), I find myself looking for the clutch and shifter?

Just curious, on that wrx have you had any drive line issues? Not saying they are bad cars, I've seen them
run real hard and that awd really snaps them out of the corners.

Mostly auto's, but one 5 speed Focus. Wife hates manuals. I've spent so much time in semi's shifting 10 speeds, 13's, 18's, etc I think it's kinda nice to throw it in D and go. Also I'm so used to the truck tranny's that having to use the clutch to shift an automotive manual seems like a giant PITA to me.

My daily/work car- 5 speed stick (Volvo S70 T5), the wife's car/family trip car- auto (Volvo V70). Like Ken said, I get into the wife's car (or almost any other car) and the first think I do is reach for the clutch  ??? D'oh!

Here in the NY Metro area Auto Trans makes the most sense. You are either on the Highway doing 70 Mph or local traffic where shifting is a pain in the ass.

2005 Mini Cooper S 6 spd manual, The thing is a friggin go kart with 170 hp. woo hoo!

2003 MINI Cooper S here. They only came in a 6 Speed manual at the time. I wouldn't have anything less than a manual anyways.

I've had several manual cars and I prefer them when I'm really driving. But the auto is better for commuting. It's hard to read the paper, shave, and eat a bowl of cereal when doing all of that shifting!

Muscle memory: I did the opposite. After a long day driving my auto work truck, I was driving my manual Mustang GT home. I couldn't figure out why it started jerking, then died, when I coasted to a stop light. Then I remembered the clutch...  :-[  ::) ;D

76,000 miles and no drive line problems at all.  The WRX is one of the best cars I have ever owned.  For the type of driving I do (rural/suburban), it's pretty good.  On long trips (3+ hours) the car could be more comfortable.

Family/wife's car VW Golf - stick
F250 SD pickup - stick
1970 Olds 4-4-2  - stick
1967 Olds Vista Cruiser - auto
1976 Honda CB750A - auto

The wife and I prefer manual transmissions, but our next car will probably end up being an automatic, just for the convenience in traffic.  Next bike will be  astick though.

me:  focus 5speed stick--a 2L inline 4 is pleanty of power for a smaller car with a manual tranny (and a well trained right foot)
jeep j20--4 speed stick, but might as well be 3 speed with that granny-gear

wife:  honda hybrid CVT....i you think it's weird to drive an automatic, try driving one of these.  the thing never shifts.  whenever i drive it i lift my foot off the gas to try to get it to shift, then remember that it doesn't.  also, the engine shuts off at stop lights.  now i've had many engines that "shut off" at a stop, but this one starts back up as soon as you take your foot off the gas.  no starter either.  it's just plain weird.

I learned to drive on a "stick" and I will always drive a manually shifted vehicle.  Driving should be fun and an auto isn't too much fun.
Anyway, my car is a 1998 VW GTI VR6 5 speed manual gearbox with a few modifications to the engine =  I put on a turbo kit three years ago.  It rips at full boost.  I actually have a for sale sign in its window right now.
My wife's car is a 2005 Volvo S60 T5 with a six speed manual gear box. Yes, I had some input into that purchase. That car is making 257 HP with boost.  Carzy thing is, my GTI will smoke that $32K car any day of the week.

Total = two cars with manual gearboxes

Except for a '51 Dodge and a '54 Chevy, I think they've all been a stick. Mostly 4 speeds.  Most of them had sychro into 1st, but a couple didn't.
