what vehicles do you drive, auto or stick
« on: July 28, 2006, 06:28:57 PM »

Road and Track reports that 90% of uS drivers drive autos, while,
80% of European drives drive sticks.

I have 10 vehicles total and only 1 is an auto (an old 74 454 crew cab which
I am going to convert one day). So 90% of my vehicles are sticks.

Used to own nothing but stick-shifts ever since my first car at 16, but I bought a '96 Subaru wagon a few months ago that's an auto.  I know, I know...  It wasn't an easy thing to do, but I got a good deal, and besides, I ride the bikes most of the time, so I didn't feel like I was betraying myself too much.

2 auto (wife's corrola, my F150)
2 sticks (civic and tercel)
so that makes me 50/50?

I drive a little Ford Focus with a 5 spd manual. Wife's car is an auto. Out of the 8 car/trucks I've owned, 6 have been manuals.

in the last 18 years I've owned three automatics, one was changed to a stick a week after I bought it, one I drove for a month then had the tranny go out, went looking for a 5 speed for it, and found another identical truck for less than the price of a tranny, (bad brakes and a crackhead owner)  pulled engine axles and T-case, then junked the auto truck, third one I drove around the block a couple times, pulled into the garage and swapped over to a stick, and sold the auto trans for more than I paid for the truck and manual trans.

all of the 'automatic' crap on my vehicles gets yanked, auto hubs hit the dumpster as soon as I get near a jack, electric T-cases get converted as soon as I get the material.

 Everything I own is manual

92 explorer sport 4.0/5spd
78 mustang 2 351w  4v, srod trans w/ inline shifter (375 horses, 1800lbs fully loaded, don't use first gear)
74 bombardier 'bombi' snowcat straight 6 with 3 speed and 9ft tracks (don't yank back on one stick when topped out on a slick road)
74 honda
86 bronco 2 302 4spd srod

in the cars, i have two of each right now.

one of the autos may end up a 5 speed if i ever get done painting it. but that is about the last project on my list right now. and oddly, i have a 700r4 sitting around that may go in one of the manuals if i ever get to that. i just dont know if i wanna give up the cool factor of the 3 on the tree.

mostly i think i have had a lot more manuals than autos.

Had both over the years. Best std I had was a 66' Dodge Charger w/383,4sp & posi. Now. I'm down to a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT (4sp-auto), 94' Plymouth Grand Voyager (4sp-auto) and
an 80' Honda Accord (4sp-std). Most fun car I had (except for the VW "The Thing") was an 84' Plymouth Turismo 2.2 w/ 5sp. Fun to drive, great gas mileage and surprised a few V8 powered cars on the freeway. Almost forgot, the Accord has a SOHC4 motor!   Later on,  Bill

2006 Ford F-150 - Auto
1955 Bel-Air - Auto

I am not a fan of manual transmissions in autos/trucks what so ever.
If it was "cool" to have a auto bike I would...

Both. Just through luck and nothing else we usually wind up with auto and manual for the daily drivers. Not intentional, but when we're looking that's just the way the cheapest deals fall.

Auto. My back can't handle a stick any more.  As for the bike, it is good for my "Core Stability" so I don't hurt my back again. ;)

All the family vehicles are registered in my name.  The vehicles that my wife drives (including the one she wants to own but never drives - a '73 Mustang Mach 1) are automatics.  The vehicles I drive/ride, my three bikes and my Mini Cooper, are manually shifted.

3 sticks right now.  I haven't owned an automatic since 1985.  I guess I'm weird, but I figure it's not worth $1000 extra at purchase and then $1000 more when it breaks.  I can replace a clutch myself, which if driven properly will never need to be done.  I can't fix an automatic.

Most Americans are lazy.  They want to sit on a couch and just watch the scenery.  I LIKE to drive.  Remember VW's old advertisements for Farvergnugen?  That translates to "The joy of driving".  Americans didn't get it.  Everyone else does.

I find it ironic that almost all motorcycles are manual transmissions.  The few attempts at automatics are usually weak and not accepted.

My son learned on a manual transmission since that's all we had.  He commented that he was glad he knew how to drive a manual transmission BEFORE learning to ride a motorcycle because it made it much easier.

I think everyone should learn to drive on a manual transmission.  You can always get lazy and drive an automatic.

Thanks for sterotyping all americans as lazy bastards. I'm an american, and am not some lumbering fat, gun toting hick with a 40 IQ.

I said MOST americans, not ALL.  I'm an american too, but there has to be some reason MOST of us drive automatics.  What's your theory?  I still say it's just laziness.  MOST americans will drive to the mailbox.  MOST americans will get mad if they can't park right next to the door at the store.  MOST americans like Harleys.  Do I (or You) fit this profile?  NO, thank God!!!

Damnit, I'm a gun toting hick, a little better than a 40IQ and I ain't fat. In 20 more years see if your 25 year old
butt can fit in the pants size your wearing now. :) (Hey, you'll be 45 then in case you can't add ;)
Oh. by the way. I'm 48 and still wear the same size I did at 20.

 :D crackin me up...

i think you aren't too far off the mark jb - i believe that back when automobiles took off in this country automatics were more a symbol of refinement and luxury, not of evil laziness...however, we have allowed ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of aristocracy by the creature comforts this country has been so faithful providing its citizens - you'll get no argument from me on that count...

5 speed Manual - 2002 Subaru WRX.  Before that, 5 speed Manual 1995 Jeep Cherokee.

When I drive my wife's 2004 Mazda Tribute (automatic), I find myself looking for the clutch and shifter?
