caliper confusion
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:23:33 PM »
1974 CB 750

Just disassembled the front caliper and the "pad seat" part # 45151-300-000, item number 17 in the parts diagram was missing. Stranger still, the caliper piston seems to be a perfect fit inside the back of the brake pad which would not even allow for the use of a "pad seat".

What gives?

This is somewhat common, have run across this a few times.  Just means that it was rebuilt at some time and they took it out for whatever reason.  Maybe they got an aftermarket piston or one with different dimensions.  I wouldn't want the top of my piston used as a contact surface in a machined hole though.  Plus the seat has a rounded top which will allow for a tiny bit of play with the angle of the pad to the rotor.

After carefully looking at the caliper schematic I can see this is what has happened.

Ron Ayers has this part for $26.07, (OUCH!) but whatta ya gonna do? Personally never understood people who will operate a two wheeled vehicle without all the appropriate parts.

I need some help figuring out how to assemble this pad. I've found a pad seat, it slides into the piston, but I can't figure out how to attach the pad! It's got a set screw, but it's not log enough to hit anything!
