sandblasting chrome headlight ears, possible?
« on: July 29, 2006, 12:46:14 AM »
Hello,
I've got a problem. I'm restoring my K1 and it seems that I have no change to find the original headlight ears
in good condition w/o dents for the K1 (colored ears). (CMS sells the right side only)
I saw one on ebay.com, but the seller does not accept Paypal, so I did not place a bid.
Now, i'm thinking about to take the chrom ears from a K2 and later for my bike, they are still available.
Question, is it possible to sandblast chrome parts or is the chrome too hard for sandblasting?
If it would be possible, i would prime and fill them to do the candy gold paint job on them.
Alternative, if anybody have some in good shape w/o dents, please let me know.

thanks,
nippon

You can sand chrome and paint it or put it in some Muratic acid. The chrome will disappear, then you can sand and paint.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks, i have the parts # and i have sent a request to DavildSilverSpares.
Would be great if i could spare the sandblasting job, if he has new ones available.

Update: DavildSilverSpares has the parts not available anymore,...seems i have to sandblast or
i have to use muriatic acid (as you wrote)  to the chrome ears.

thanks,

later chrome ears do have additional mounting holes, located rearward of the headlite bolt holes for turn sig mounting.
the nuts inside the headlite bucket (with ground wires attached to them) will need to be changed to later model ones to accomodate new bolts. Then you relocate your existing turn sigs to thier new locations, using correct k2-k4 signal stem nuts.
