Cl175 cam chain install/ clutch problem
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:16:48 AM »
I have a 71 cl175 that came with a spare motor. The motor that is in it has a bad cylinder. I got the spare engine running, but it leaked a ton of oil and the clutch doesn't work(I can pull the lever but it won't disengage). I tried adjusting it to no avail. I took the topend off and the bores and pistons look good, so I'm going to replace the broken base gasket and put it back together My questions are: What is the proper way to install the camchain (ie cam/piston position), and what could be wrong with the clutch(I might just put the clutch from the other motor in this one, but not if I don't have to)? Thanks, Jimmy.

Cant remember the exact procedure as the 175's have different cranks on different models, some are 360 deg cranks (both pistons up at same time) and some are 180 deg cranks (one up one down) but basicaly you will find an LT and an LR mark on the generator rotor plus a static mark on the case.
Pick a cylinder and line up the "T" mark relevant to that one (if its a 360 crank there will be only one "T" mark) Look at the cam and the two lobes for that clyinder will point evenly downwards. At that point there will be either a dot (or circle mark) facing directly upwards or a horizontal line that goes, well horizontal.

Hope that helps.
WARNING--- DO NOT use any gasket compound ESPECIALLY on the cam bearing gaskets AND clean out the centifugal oil filter on the crank PLUS the oil pump suction filter inside the case. AND repeat the cleaning at 1,000 miles to clear any gasket debris from the rebuid.
