I was over at the project board, and including mine, there are 18 active 500/550 projects, and I think 15 are 550's.

The 500/550 has always been well represented here, but it seems like there are more lately.

Last year there seemed to be more 750 projects, the year before it was 500/550....well, it was at my house anyways... 2 more 550 projects left to go here...just tore one down today, will tear the second one down on Saturday, hope to prep and paint both frames on Sunday. trying to get these 550 projects done  so I can start on a couple of ugly 750's  that followed me home for a summer project.
Perhaps it has something to do with  regional availability,I haven't seen many 500/550's around NY lately, but ya can't swing a cat without hitting a 750 lately.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

At least in this part of the world, there seems to have been more CB550s for sale in the past year or so than all the other sohc4 displacements combined.  I bought one not long ago, and am in the process of sorting out all of the issues that I can find.  I like it when these motorcycles change hands, as they often get fixed up and put back on the road by enthusiasts.

well, im not sure if theres a surge or not, but i do know i specifically chose the 550 for a list of reasons over the 750 (weight had a lot to do with it).. but it seems with the 750s being more plentiful, cheaper, easier to find, etc that there would always be more 750 projects

I bought a '73 500 a few months ago from the original owner. Came with most of the tool kit, owners manual, and some upgrades. Other than rust on the chrome and in the tank it looks like all I need is a battery and fresh gas.  I'll post up a thread on it after I finish a couple other projects.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

And here I am getting ready to start my 550 project post.  :P

Although really, as I've owned this bike for 15+ years, it's ALWAYS been a project.

Well, the VIN tag on head tube is missing.  That does appear to be a stock F bike exhaust, and those are the right carbs for an F bike or pre-77 K. The frame and idiot light/ignition switch appear to be a '77-'78 and not a '76. My '77 F frame used the ear for the passenger peg mounts, but the '74 and '75 frames I have use 2 tubes to form a traiangle with the main frame.

So it definitely looks like a mash up of parts from different year bikes.

For a while it was harder to find a decent 550 for ale than a 750 around here.  It seems in the last year a lot of 550's have become available for some reason.  This may be what you're seeing.  I think it may have something to do with people wanting to cash in on the "cafe racer" craze.  I think we've got about another year or so of that left before things get back to normal a bit.

Definitely goes in waves imo.

The price of 750's has gone up a lot, that might have something to do with it. Around here you can buy a project 750 for $2000+. 550's are a better deal financially, less money out of pocket to start with, parts are cheaper, etc.

One thing I am seeing is a lot of 'bill of sale only' bikes out there, where the seller was not the last registered owner and doesn't have a title.

I know in some states that's not an issue, but in Illinois those are parts bikes because unless the seller was the last registered owner and is willing to apply for a lost title, getting a title is basically impossible.

I really wish Illinois would adopt the very reasonable Michigan model for replacement titles.

I bought two 71 cb500 within a week of each other...  Both with no title or registration but both filling out all the proper paperwork that I need for the NYS DMV.  72 and below you do not need a title and there is a form for getting a new registration.  I guess add 2 more to the list of cb500 projects...

I've got 2 cb550's in the works, a 77 ad 78.  Been dreadfully slow.  I hope to get some progress done soon and get riding.

I agree with the "surge". A decade ago you could find these bikes left by the curb, now everyone wants one. Thankfully someone like myself who has always wanted one since a child, got lucky and found one for practically nothing that could have a few grand poured into it along with some heart soul and blood. Did I mention that its probably worth more then the Buell I just sold? No complaints here. Although I would like to find a cheap 750 to get into.

unfortunately, MI. seems more interested in adopting the Illinois model...

To go with their iphones I suppose.

Interesting that it's a "K" frame he's using for his "rare" Super Sport...
