I have 2 Fuel  caps & both have internal rusty dust chunks in them.I ride for a while & she runs good & then....,well you get the picture.I've cleaned out my entire fuel system too many times, the tank is Nice w/ no rust problems;that gas cap is peppering lots of particles down gravity feeding into my system & now I want a solution.I'm looking around here in the Greensboro/Triad area,I live in High Point,NC. & so far..,no dice.

Please PM me(or email) if anybody's close to the area & can let me know who they are... Man,I'm desperate !  :'(

                                                  Thanks a Ton,

                                                                         Bill

what about rust reformer? the stuff that converts iron oxide into a black material that blocks new rust from forming?.. youd have to get the loose chunks of rust out though, possibly with the ultrasonic cleaner, shake some beads or BBS inside it, etc

Hi Jason,
These 2 little caps have that rusty dust in them & I know the ultrasonic cleaner is the full cure. The tank is nice..,except its got that never ending rusty dust seeping down from the cap  >:( Man,am I EVER tired of that stuff fouling the running of my little Honda !! I need to use the bike for now over the car & it's not much fun..,if you know what I mean.
The Ultrasonic cleaner machine WILL fix this problem.

hmm, you could buy a small ultrasonic cleaner yourself, one large enough to do the fuel cap, and maybe even large enough to do a carburetor at a time.. and then if it rusts again in the future youre all set

You can take the gas caps apart to remove the rust chucks and then treat them with whatever you rust remover of choice is.  I prefer prep & etch.

Just get an empty (preferably plastic) paint container and electrolytic-ally remove the rust from it. Thats what I did.

Buy a small jewelers ultrasonic, the one I have is under 12" square and maybe 8" tall. It works great, I use it for all sorts of stuff motorcycle and non m/c related. Or try soaking it in white vinegar for a couple days, that'll get rid of rust pretty quick.

This is the one I use, I paid $100 for it locally and have used it to clean jets and other small carb parts, petcocks etc. Works great, well worth picking up.

Just use some apple cider vinegar or some phosphoric acid.  Works like a charm.  The acid is a tad bit quicker.

Its safe, and easy. All it takes is a battery charger and washing soda.  ;)

Post a pic. I have never seen one that does not come apart. Once you see how it comes apart then you can clean it IMHO
ICBW but got to see it to believe it.

I am in Mooresville if that helps and have a Ultrasonic. Are you running inline filters? Sure its not rust in the tank? Tried soaking caps in evaporust?

id try the vinegar idea first.. its the cheapest, worst case scenario you waste half a cup to a cup of vinegar

The riveted ones do come apart, you just need to drill out the rivets. Then when you reinstall just use a bolt. Hondaman sells a kit or you can go to town and country/ace and they have a ss bolt and nut that'll fit.

fyi O'Reily's sells it by the pint , like 7-8 bux or something . If it didn't do the trick you can always reuse it on something else.

I thank All of you members for all your great advice,I learned plenty for the next jobs ahead. 78whiteorbs,I PM'd you twice & left my contact#...? I want to ask you to run my fuel cap in your ultrasonic cleaner Please;that is the way I pefer cleaning it on this job.
I'm hoping to FINALLY clean out my cap w/ that process as soon as I can.I'm sure that's what I need now.The sediment from the "wood bleach" tank cleaning process caused all the rusty type particles to float to the top as the tank sat w/ the cap on it(I live & learn..,next time I'll remove the cap  ::))for 24 hrs. That really did a Nice job on the tank ! ,but collected all the sediment into the cap...
& now for the Finale... :)

Any other members here in NC. w/ an Ultrasonic Cleaner ??

Please PM me;I use this bike ALL the time for my basic transportation & I Need the entire fuel system cleaned up once & for all CLEAN..,the cap IS the culprit.

I thought 78whiteorbs was helping with that??
For $20 you can get the tool and stainless rivets and fix it right. Even ultra sonic will not get all the crap out it will break it loose. some times you got to take things apart. How ever I still have not seen it. If you need help posting a photo plenty here can talk you through it. I know I was digitally challenged. Heck still am some. ;D

There is no need for an ultrasonic cleaner.  You will get better results with vinegar or some acid.  You dont have to remove the cap.  If you get some phosphoric acid and pour it in the tank, fasten the cap and put the tank upside down for say a half hour, then check the cap and you should be good to go.  Hell it might even be 15 minutes.

I think the ultrasonic cleaner is more of a fascination to you than anything else.  I did the same thing with Soda blasting.  The idea of it was super cool to me.  Since you do not have one I suggest going a different route.
