CB550 Random stalls
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:08:55 PM »
I have been having this problem for a few weeks now.
The bike will randomly stall, I pull over wait for a bit and than fire it up and keep going. It has happened in the morning and in the afternoon.
All four plugs look the same, and no real sign of anything major.
-I've cleaned the petcock.
-popped the fuel cap(don't think it the fuel breather)
-full charge on battery.
I'm not sure if it's a fuel or ignition issue.
Any help???

I gather you aren't losing electrical power? If it's a sudden cutout then it's probably electrical. Check your fuses are ok and not making intermittent contact.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Well I still have lights, and it will crank, and will start if i give it throttle but it runs real rough. Like i said though if i wait a bit it will run just fine.
I have checked fuses, they seem ok.

Dirty fuel possibly. The carbs not being fed fast enough. Check what's in the float bowls and clean the carbs if needed. Hell, clean them anyway.   :D

Digging this back up, ok its been a long fall and winter for me,
I replaced my coils,
cleaned and rebuilt my carbs,
swapped out the Dyna-S for stock points
Wrapped my fuel lines with think fiberglass cloth.............................

And STILL having the same issue.

hey nerf..
give us more detail of what it does when it cuts out.
you still have all electricals when it cuts out, right?
is it an abrupt cut out, or does it sputter and die?
how is your fuel line routed?  short and straight to your carbs, or long and loopy? bubbles? inline filter?
fiberglass fuel line wrap....whats that for?  :o

I had that problem on my 550 and it was the wires behind the ignition switch.  Too much bouncing around and it would jostle wires loose.  Needed a new switch and all is well now.

hey nerf..
give us more detail of what it does when it cuts out. sounds flat but will go if I give it lots of throttle, kinda intermentent, yet seems to happen around 8 miles or so of riding

is it an abrupt cut out, or does it sputter and die?It seems to sputter a little
how is your fuel line routed?  short and straight to your carbs, or long and loopy? bubbles? inline filter?fairly short, inline filters, not petcock filter(was removed to try and remidy the problem), bubbles??
fiberglass fuel line wrap....whats that for?prevent fuel line from getting warm  :o

sounds like a fuel supply issue.
never heard of fuel line wrap needed because fuel lines get too warm...especially here in WA.   :P
i betcha the forum members  who ride when its 90+ out dont think about fuel lines getting too hot.

bubbles, in your fuel line, preventing good downward flow of gas to your bowls.
kinda hard to see with wrapped fuel lines.

get your fuel lines as short as needed to have a downward (gravity assisted) flow of gas, right to your carbs.
flat spots and upward bends will prevent good flow.

a picture of your setup would be good.

Thanks Fly- I'm going to get some clear fuel line, and probably get some new filters.
The guy who i bought the bike from is a Navada transplant, he said he had issues with vapor lock on one of his old bike.
