There are 2 of us leaving Boston on Saturday 15th with final destination of Maggie Valley, NC where we will explore the surrounding area for the rest of the week before heading North. Chuck we are planning on coming to see you at the Hondachopper meet so look out for two sunrise orange CB750s.

Here is our route down on Saturday/Sunday - 1035 miles (including Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge parkway. If anyone wants to meet with us along the way let me know/send a PM with phone number and suggested meeting place along the route. I will contact you as the ride progresses and you can decide if its still possible (from past experience I know its hard to meet people on time when on the road).

We are aiming to be in Riverton, VA on the first night (~550 miles from Boston). Anyone want to meet for dinner let me know!

Here is the route - suggestions on stuff to see along the way very welcome! We are passing through Boone, NC where in April 2001 I bought the CB750K4 I will be riding on this trip (only 45K miles later  ;D)

Get as many of those 1035 miles in on Saturday as possible! You'll slow down considerably once you hit Skyline Drive.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

A great day for riding! Mid 70s temp and light traffic meant a steady 75mph down I-84/I-91 along the Merritt Pkway to the Tappan Zee bridge over the Hudson River. Then it was down to I-78W to 81S and finally onto some secondary roads - Rt997/Rt 67 etc. passed through Boonsboro, passed Gettysburgh - great scenery around here and finally ended up at Riverton VA by 6pm and 530 miles later. The two CB750s - my K4 and Anders k8 never missed a beat running tip-top.

We met up with Prokop (70750) in Riverton after missing him on the road - he had rode 40 miles just to see us and it was great to see him and his bike in person. Had dinner at the South Street grill - American diner style and then Prokop headed home.

Tomorrow the fun really starts with the Skyline Drive :)

Here we are meeting Prokop

cheers
Andy

Today was amazing! 440 miles of twistes! Yes all day long...at mile 400 I was on Rt194 in NC and laughing at how technical it was and tired I was and how I was chasing this pickup truck that was gunning it (local; woman driver). Tight hairpin turns with loose gravel sprinkled on the corners for good measure :)

Day started at 7.30 with the Skyline Drive - very nice no traffic I only saw 4 deer (Anders saw 9). No cops visible or if they were it was easy to spot.

Then it was the Blue Ridge Parkway - slightly faster at ~55mph (I lost Anders for the rest of the day as he sped off - he is now at Maggie Valley - I am typing this from Boone NC). I took a few wrong turns but ended up on Rt221 then Rt184 to Boone - oh joy!

Arrived in Boone at 6.30pm and staying at the Hidden Valley Motel - very nice!

Andy, I did you all a favor by being only a few miles from you as I was riding on Saturday. This means no rain. Let me know when you are on the way back and I will ride further East for your comfort.

You must have Verizon.

Fair warning to all - No AT&T coverage most of the time, at least not mine or where I stopped.

What's your plan now?

Tell the Dragon to kiss my hairy ass please  ;D When you get to mile 10 east of Deals Gap on a left hand curve please pick up any trash that may have been left from my bike.  :)

Have a blast.

I finished today grinning ear to ear. 300 miles of pure motorcycle pleasure.

I failed to mention that last night I got hit on by a sultry older blonde woman at the bar I was dining in and got her card :) That must have been a good omen as today was amazing.

From Boone it was back on the BRP and it was so quiet that I began to get worried. No deer, no traffic just endless tight curves, hairpin bends and focused riding. I will say that the Dunlop K70 held their own and did a great job. The clouds were low and plenty of photo opportunities - see pics below. No rain!

After a morning of amazing roads I got to Maggies Valley for lunch. Anders was nowhere in sight so I headed to Franklin since I heard there was some good roads - oh yes! However as I left the rain started and it was heavy - going down the steep Rt19 in the rain was no picnic. However by the time I got past the Cherokee reservation the sun came out :) Rt28 to Franklin was full of tight technical twisties that made it really interesting. Coming back along Rt1350 was even better - phenomenal road that had plenty of super tight turns. I got back at 6 pm totally exhilarated.

Tomorrow - Deals Gap and theDragon run...

Cheers
Andy

Weather might not be kind tomorrow if the weather projections are accurate...what I am seeing about 150-170 miles NW of you in Tri-Cities area of NE TN.

Glad you are enjoying the trip. Yes, cops don't try to hide too much and they are generally at botton of hills...

Thanks RAFster for the update on your end. We are going to go for it in any case - Deals gap in the rain :( We are currently in Waynesville at the Smoky Mountain Roasters - good fresh coffee and hot waitresses ;)

Chuck - we will be coming to the Honda chopper meet on Friday as we ride back up the BRP. We will only have time for about an hour but looking forward to meeting up with you - look for two sunrise orange CB750s

Jerry - yeah that would limit your cell signal. I would say we have been lucky with the weather and everything from here is a bonus. I don't ask for much :) Coming from Scotland I take my good days when I can.

Prokop - rough plan to ride the BRP to the end in Friday then Saturday I need to be north of Gettysburgh by evening - and good routes that you know let me know. Or meet us Friday on the BRP.

cheers
Andy

Got back at 4.30pm today...another great day of moto adventure. After the delicious coffee and croissants at the Smoky Mountain Roaster we rode down Rt74 to Rt28N. It rained the whole way but we had geared up after coffee do it was all good. As we sped along Rt28 the rain dried up which was a good thing as there was a detour at Fontana which took us on this tight twisty mountain road which kept us alert.

After this little sojourn we sped through a very wet Rt129 to Robbinsville before discovering Deals Gap was the opposite direction - oops! However it worked out in our favour as going back Rt129 was now dry and since it followed the river there were plenty of wide sweepers, tight turns and chicanes. A good warmup for what was to come.

We arrived at Deals Gap saw the tree of shame, had some lunch and marvelled at how quiet it was. Even better the roads were semi-dry and it wasn't raining.

I was thinking of Jerry as we set off and have to say was a little nervous. However having spent the last few days on super technical roads I need not have worried. It was empty! I had the whole road to myself (Anders had sped off in front). Tight turns and every now and then a KillBoy tent photographing you as you took some corner...of course I tried hard to pose as I tried not to crash! The 11 miles flew by fast and I got to the other side without having seen a single cop :). So I turned round and did it all again this time stopping at the overlook. No traffic again! At the overlook drops of rain began to fall do I quickly took off and got back to Deals Gap exhilarated that I had not crashed and no one else had hit me! The K4 performed amazingly!!

I parked the bike in front of the KillBoy dragon and then the skies opened up - torrential downpour!!! Success I had made it!!!

We spent about 45 waiting for the rain to stop but it never did so it was a wet ride home via Rt 28/Rt74/Rt19.

Another adventurous day and we keep on thinking just how great these bikes are. 40+ year old and still giving all they got.

Tire review - Dunlop K70 - I said yesterday how great these tired have been in the twisties and still adhere to this. However the 1458 miles in the last 4 days - much of that high speed miles has not been good for the rear. I doubt it would get me home. Lucky for me I have a fellow SOHC rider (not on forum) coming from TN tomorrow to ride with us for a day and he has been very kind in bringing me a new IRC tire he picked up at the local Honda shop. Will get me home at least.

That's all for now - check out today's photos below.

Cheers
Andy
