"Del Sol" 1974 cb360 Build
« on: December 28, 2012, 04:01:09 PM »
So I'm skipping the boring beginning stuff like demo and grinding and cleaning and chopping and grinding some more. That gets boring to read after awhile so I'm jumping right into my build. It is a 1974 cb360 with 3,600 miles on it that ran awesome when I bought it off CL for $400. Nothing leaking, some rust, crappy OE parts hanging off, etc etc. I had the frame and swingarm powdered Vtwin Orange and the triple trees semi gloss black. The top triple tree had cracked off near the pinch point so I had my shop aluminum weld it back together. Turned out great after getting powdered. New all-balls bearings and steering stem back installed. Also rebuilt front forks with new seals and fork oil, 15wt. The fork lowers were media blasted with aluminum oxide and then polished with mothers aluminum polish, thats all I will be doing to them as I like the look.

Oh yeah and I'm calling it "Del Sol" because the frame looks like it just got shot out of the sun and landed in my garage. More progress. Motor is finished being cleaned. All I did was use WD40 and sand the hell out of the whole thing with 180grit and 000 wool and then a wire wheel on my drill. I wiped everything down, polished it with mothers aluminum polish and walked away. I wanted that "used, but not abused" look of bare aluminum with some character to it and this process did just that. I got the motor in by laying the frame over the engine. Did it by myself and only took some minor tweaking to get the engine bolts in. Also got the center stand cleaned up with an 80grit flap disc on my metabo, then wire wheeled, then polished with the mothers again. Center stand installed. You will also see I got new gas tank rubbers front and back.

Lots of stuff left to do, just getting that itch to get this things done. I put the gas tank on after I stripped it to start doing some mock up of seat/tank positioning and also the start laying out all the electrical. I also am looking for some chrome 33mm clip ons if anyone has some laying around they want to sell. Next step is doing the rims and tires along with the sprocket on the back and the brake rotor on the front. I will not be installing new bearings in the wheels as the bike only had 3600 miles on it and wasn't even really broken in. Exhaust will be wrapped at some point, that will be a first for me so any advice would be nice. Going with black or gray wrap.

That motor finish looks good against the shiny frame.  I might steal your technique for my little Kawi!

Ok so here is where I am to date. Wiring just about done for headlight, taillight, and charging system only. It will be kick start only for now until I get a new solenoid for my starter motor. One question that I have is what is the oil light in my gauge cluster wired to? My wiring diagram shows it wired to the ignition switch and then grounded?? That makes no sense to me. Am I missing an oil pressure switch somewhere?
