This is my 76' supersport restoration/customization thread

This is a "project" that is done on a "whenever i can afford, and want to spend my cash on CB750 parts" basis.

I think i powdercoated the frame 2 years ago, but progress have been slow.

This is what it looks like right now.


A new 19" rim from Buchanan's has been laced to the stock hub. the 18" Henry Abe rear is just a placeholder, as i am restoring / relacing the rear hub.




Lovered front fork, 2.5x19" Excel rim with 120/70-19 Michelin pilot sport 3
The fork is lowered with a spacer (thank you sohc4 forum) until i get around to order shorter fork tubes from Cyclex.



The rim is laced to the hub. Work done on the kitchen table.





This is my truing/balancing stand. The amount of force needed to get the rim rolling is very small with the edged bearings.






rear rim and hub is ready to be laced.  4 hours of sanding and 1 hour of buffing got me this shine.
when i was done, i noticed i had forgotten the edge of the hub at the chain side.

The rim is a 5.5x18" Excel and the tire I'm going to use is 160/60-18 Michelin pilot road 3.

What swinging arm are you going to use with that rim?

with the wheel all the way back, i actually have 5'ish mm Clarence on each side of the tire.

nice job on the rims! did you paint the insides of the rim? and just polish the outer spoke edge?

That's a beast of a rear tire!  Are you worried about decreasing your ability to turn by using such a larger rear tire ?

yep, the inside is painted. The casting was so rough i'd be sanding forever.


I have no idea what to expect handling vise on this bike.
The tire is'nt that wide i think, its just a 160/60-18 my other bike has a 180/55-17 and it corners fine.

What is your other bike? Just because that tire works on one bike does not mean it will work on others the same way.
Have you put the sprocket on it and checked for clearance? That might be less than the clearance on the swing arm.

In what way will you modify the arm? Just going by pictures that rim looks humongous.
I checked mine with the wheel all the way forward and a 130/80 just fits before the chainguard interferes. I'm sure you aren't running a chainguard but how much extra clearance does that give you.
They are effin pretty rims.

Update about the rear swingarm.

I have cut out some metal from the inside of the swingarm, this is a picture of the hole, and the plug.
I have some grinding to do on the plug still.


i get around 3.5cm of extra space in the front. (1,35 inches)





here i have inserted the wheel and centered it. 7 mm of clearance on each side.
The wheel is as far in as it goes in the swingarm.  Did i mention i have some more grinding to do? :)

for the chain, i have offset sprockets for both the engine and the rim, i also have a 78 f2 sprocket carrier if i need more clearance.

Anoyone have any thoughts on the negative impact this modification might have on the arm?

The steel im adding in the hole is 4mm thick, the steel in the swingarm is 2,5mm.

A small update on this project.

I just love the look of the stock "fastback" seatcowl of the CB750 supersport and i wanted to continue using it. But don't want a tall seat, as the stock is.

so i have decided to shorten the stock seatpan, and keep the stock hinges and lock.



This seatpan has been shortened by 6.2 inches.

Any seatbuilders in here who want to give me a tip on what foam to use?

you got a pic with both rims and tires mounted in chassis?  im currently running kz mags in a 81 DOHC 750 swingarm. 130/90-16 rear.  i have about 1/2 clearance each side all the way forward.

Found a NOS pipe for the F on german ebay.

set me back 600$, but will look awesome on the bike.






I am also in the process of modifying a ducati sport 1000 triple tree to be able to use the old forks from my ducati sport 1000.  after seeing all the "easy" gsxr swaps on this site. I can say for sure, the ducati triple is not a direct fit :)

Will get back with pictures of this soon.

Just remembered, i had some more pictures that i took after creating spacers to center the rear wheel in the frame.







Also, Ducati supersport 1000 have the same brake disc bolt circle as the honda supersport.
The diameter of the middle hole is a bit bigger though.  I will use this combo on the new fork.
Single disc on the left side of the wheel.

I couldn't see how you shortened the seat pan. Are you willing to divulge your method?
