How much is a used 750 motor worth?
« on: May 15, 2013, 02:25:14 PM »
I know location can play a role in this (Some people on the west coast will pay anything), but how much would you pay for a used parts motor in the south? I finally got an old guy that uses CB750 heads for doorstops to sell some stuff after a year of trying. It's not all in the best condition, but what would be a fair price for a complete CB750 motor in nonrunning condition? He has several, but hopefully I can find one that still turns over and doesn't have any cracked or bent fins.

I mostly just want the head and barrels for an upcoming rebuild, but he wants the same price for the head as the entire motor. I figure it never hurts to have spare parts.

Oh...is there any I should keep an eye out for in particular? Maybe early serial numbers?

Thanks for the info.

$200-$300 tops.  Unless they're REAL hard to find elsewhere.

The guy wants $200. I know I can drive a couple hours and get a nice head and barrels for $150. Or a complete running "black motor" for $500.

I thought the extra parts would be nice like side covers, shift forks, etc., but I'm not sure of the quality. A lot of stuff has sat outside unplugged for years.

If you trust the guy selling the running black motor, that sounds like a winner.  I'd pay much more for a known-to-be-good, running motor.

What's with the black motor? I have one, a non-runner, that I stripped out for a mockup, but I still have all the parts if they are better than a regular motor.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

The guy said its a SS engine. I don't know a whole lot about them. I heard the bottom ends are better on these, but don't know why or if it's true. I also heard the top ends wore out faster. I was planning to build up my 73 K engine, but would the "SS" be better? Also, would I need to get later model carbs and boots? I just want something reliable with a bit more power. my k motor isn't in bad shape just leaking oil at the seems and a bit tired.

Don't think any K motors were black from the factory . Black was a late F thing .

It's not what we think is a fair price, it's what you are willing to pay.   8)

The SS motor is at a place in Oklahoma.

Have you been to tontitown machine before? The owner is a nice guy. they saved my butt one weekend when they actually had a master cylinder rebuild kit in stock. I couldn't believe it.

I heard there's some other old guy in Springdale with a stockpile of parts, but I've never learned the name or place.

You're right about the price. I just wasn't sure what would be fair for something not running.

How bad does being left out in the weather affect the insides of the motor if the intakes aren't plugged?

That would be a deal killer for me.

Ask to pull the valve cover with your labor and look for retained oil (good) or rust (bad).  Pulling the head is well worth $100 in labor to the seller. If you don't buy the complete motor you won't have any spares.

Alternative is give your K3 a complete new gasket set with pucks, new rings & hone, maybe a valve-grind if needed..........and be happy.

A friend had several spare crankshafts that were all in good spec. I had one. We traded all for cash and several hundred dollars worth of parts to a local motor builder. Who would think an oil tank for a CB750 K0 would be worth more than a crankshaft?  Ebay buyers, that who!

In Virginia I paid $200 for F3 engine, wheels from F3, complete fork with tripple, wire harness and odds and pieces.

But the engine needs a total head job to last longer than few thousand miles.

I went and looked at the parts motor I was offered and based on current recycling prices I would say it was worth about $60 -$70.

I was offered my choice of motors from a pile behind a shop. The "best" had the side covers removed, intakes and exhausts left unplugged and had the spark plugs removed just to make sure it was thoroughly left open to the elements. Some of the others actually had plants growing out of them. I kept my money and took the wife out to dinner.

Key point here boys...when looking at a pile of 750 motors always look for the 1007400 or less numbers, they are worth buying! Trust me... ;)

What's with pre-1007400 engine numbers? Sandcast?

I actually live in Elm Springs. I've attended a couple of the Ozark Vintage Cycle events, but always seem to be busy during a lot of meet ups or rides. I would love to go on a ride and bounce ideas off other owners since my bike almost always seems to need something and I have to figure a lot out as I go. I don't know many people that ride except for one co-worker of mine who bought himself a cafe'd GL1000 off Ebay.

So yeah, yesterday the parts motors were at Tontitown Machine. He's got several bikes and motors in various states of disassembly in his shop. I thought I was going to have crack at one of those, but nope. I had my choice of the pile in the back. It was pretty disappointing.

just between you and me, he is near impossible to buy from. Inflated prices, parts are in poor condition. He is very nice but not realistic on the prices. I had an opportunity a few years back to buy all of his cb750 stuff but he was motivated to sell due to pressure from the city to clean up his property. I guess they have slacked off for now but if they came back he would likely be motivated to sell again. Its a shame all of the stuff he has rotting outside and wont sell it.

Maybe in California they'll pay anything. About a year ago I got a complete motor ---the guy claimed 13 k for $100-- no carbs, but it checked out sound. It s still sitting in my shop. I bought it to learn on and use it like a text book. Any procedure I plan to do on my driver, I'll often do on the spare motor first.
