Help needed cracked engine block
« on: May 16, 2013, 04:11:32 PM »
Hello every one!
Thanks a lot for all the information on the forum, I'm still going thru tons of posts.
So I got my self a project... it took me a while to sort out little gremlins, and still a lot to do but today I realized that I have crack in engine block.
Funny enough oil doesn't seems to leak from that crack, I have a very slow drop on the end of gearshift spindle...

I'm thinking to either drop this bike and get something in better condition or.... bit the bullet and get new engine block...
I don't want to sell this bike, I love it and spent to much cash already plus this would be a defeat and i don't like that, on the other hand splitting engine and putting it together is something I've never done and so I'm a bit concerned...

Many thanks for advice!
There is a block going on eBay in UK right now...
My bike is 1976 CB550F

Regards
Greg

Before you can use JB WELD you will need to clean the area REAL good with some acetone to remove any oil.. The JB Weld wont bond to oily surfaces!!!

Good advice from both..............minor at this point but REALLY clean it AFTER you drain the oil and prop the bike so the bottom of that case area drains. You may want to very slightly score the edge of one side of the crack to allow some room for the JB Weld to "fill" the space.  Follow the directions and don't fill the case too soon.  If you later have a small oil weep, you can remove the JB Weld and re-do the patch.

Thank you!
Sounds like a good plan, I thought that would be the end of my bike...

umm?drop the pan,you might find its only a casting flaw?ive seen a few similar looking mold markings, the bolt should be holding it squared up?,man i think if that was cracked and slipped out of line that bad it would be pissing niagra falls oil?clean the area right up first and take a closer look, heres a random case i have, its a parting line in the casting mold.

Dave500 is correct, it's a casting flaw - my 550 has an identical looking one in the same place that I initially thought was a crack.

AMAZING!
That would explain why there is no oil drip form there.
Man I had a nervous brake down when I saw it yesterday.

And yes there is so much gunk around plus the silver hamerite all over the place.

Thanks a bunch!!!

A good visual inspection always should include cleaning the area AND using a bright LED flashlight.
