A buddy of mine told me a long time ago (when we were both teenagers) when you get so mad you want to throw a hammer at it, just walk away until you calm down.
Sounds like the op has done that and is still frustrated. If you really want a twin, get one. Put some clip ons on your SOHC4, call it a cafe and eBay it for twice what it's worth. :-)

Yeah, I don't think just having two cylinders will make things as easy as you think it will, especially if it needs work.
You could have wound up buying someone else's lemon and didn't know it.
You'll never know until you take the time to methodically go through all the systems to check for proper operation.

Patience is something you will have to have in spades if you want to own a vintage bike and maintain it yourself.

I will usually skip screw extractors and go right for drilling with reverse bits. If they come out its a bonus.

I had a couple weeks recently where I was a bit pissed at my 550. Another broken part meant I had to take the motor apart immediately getting it back together. Having to do the work doesn't bother me much, because I usually enjoy it, but the delay to getting back on the road and especially the extra money I need to spend really depressed me.

For about two weeks I moped around the house and didn't do #$%* to the bike. After a some time seeing my roommate ride his bike and hearing bikes from my bedroom window I got the motivation to get back to work, and a bit of beer while browsing the internet got me to bite the bullet and spend some money.

My point is for some of us walking away for the night is not enough. If you get frustrated walk away before you break something. It may even take a couple weeks. Go to some bike nights or something, and if you love riding you will eventually get back to work with renewed focus and drive.

I have found out over the years of working on my beloved Honda's that paitence is key. When frustrated and not know what to do next. Follow the advice that has been given here, step away!
Have you done the 3K tuneup yet, or are you just trying to get it running?

Only time I ever threw a wrench was when i was tightening the front brake clamp on the bars and the wrench slipped, leaving a 4" gouge across the tank in the new paint job. Never did find that wrench. And the next day I was more pissed about the missing wrench.

My bro inlaw got pissed at a dog of his and threw a shoe at it, problem was the shoe missed the dog and went trough a window instead. He was bummed and me laughing about it didn't help.

So many great replies here.

My 2 cents- buy yourself a cheap piece of #$%* with two cylinders and you will still have a piece of #$%*. Design doesn't matter when you start at fubar.

Basket case project bikes are very ambitious for a first bike, and they certainly separate the wheat from the chaff.

Machines can be frustrating, but it's still a machine. After every defeat, double down. Whining doesn't solve a thing.

Can't say I am too surprised to see this one stall out. Dave hits the nail on the head.

A wise man once told me that if it has tits or a motor it will give you problems.

Luckily everything on my bike so far has gone smooth and I haven't had a problem yet (probably just jinxed myself on that) and has been about the easiest project I've picked up.

My Jeeps on the other hand are another story. I had a chunk snap off the cylinder head a week after I bought the current one.

My old 89 XJ I went through 4 radiators trying to figure out why the mechanical motor fan kept eating them before figuring out the fan clutch was loose letting it slide forward when I drove but not when it was idling.

Had a 1990 YJ that I only kept a few weeks. Went out wheeling it only to realize the rear of the frame had rotted through right at the rear shackles. Found that out the hard way.

Blown countless u joints, axle shafts, couple broken Dana 35s, ect, ect lol. Had enough busted knuckles and smashed heads on diff covers for one lifetime too. I had my current Jeep up in the air at work a couple weeks ago and was running to grab something because I was in a hurry and as I'm fiddling with my phone to shut the flashlight off, bam, slammed my head right into my rear wheel hub. Thank god I missed the wheel studs.

My daily driver is 86CJ7 since 1998 - I know a thing or two about Jeeps

The reason I keep it alive is the sturdy platform, you can always fix old jeep.

I am notorious for throwing tools when I get frustrated. not something I am super proud of. my best friend since we were very young used to run a shop with me, he'd see that look in my eye and know things were gonna flew. i inadvertently nailed him a time or two and so he learned to duck at first. then he learned to cut me off at the pass, hand me a smoke and say "Maybe we should go for a ride, leave this POS alone for the rest of the day". he was a wise and patient friend. now I know. put it down, light a smoke or have a drink, and come back tomorrow. I've sold or trashed bikes and projects on a spur of the moment rage and kicked myself later. I cant tell you how many times my current 750K has been put on CL for sale. Thankfully my Wife is a fast learner and always goes in behind me and deletes the post.....

Breath, stretch, walk away. Relax, plan and start again.

Honestly the amount of cylinders isn't likely to make a difference. My first labor of love was a 2 cylinder that I'm riding right now. She gave us a major run around with her carbs. Took two months to sort those out. My four? Not a freaking problem with the carbs.. It was the wiring and everything else.

Doesn't matter how many cylinders whatsoever. What matters is how long they sat for, how bad of shape they are in, how badly they were treated before you and how much time your willing to spend. Old bikes mean lots of wrenching, chasing gremlins and major time invested. Period.

Nothing wrong with walking away for days, weeks even months if you need it before going back at it. Don't like wrenching and chasing issues then don't get an old bike!

Many years ago I raced Enduro's.
'One of the boys' bough a new Suzuki PE175 and had a similar experience (couldn't get bike up a technical hill about 1/2 mile long)
Ended up throwing it down the hill, then ran after it and started kicking the bike (not the kick starter, the bike)
When the tank split he finally realised what he was doing.
After that, we always used 'tank Hill' as part of out practice course

I did the old drill through the thumb once. You usually only do that once. Now you are safe, proceed carefully.

I rock an 89 XJ! Two door Sport I spent a year building. Fought many battles with it but ultimately got it to drive me through the mojave with no problems and from LA to NM to KS with not a hiccup. Best vehicle i have owned

Between jobs I worked for a guy in car shop. He did mainly auto body and paint, but also insurance and some Corvette special stuff. Working with him was painful experience, within 5-10 minutes to the job he was all F this and F that and I hate this car, I hate this job - that dude was like 60 years old. LOL! Behaved like a stupid teenager.

So you know him too LOL!
