Hi Folks,
New member here. I picked up a non-running 1980 CB650C a few weeks ago and have been reading through these forums for assistance in getting the bike running. Can't thank you all enough for the wealth of knowledge!
So the bike had 2 holed pistons. The PO took it to a mechanic and the mechanic said it needs a rebuild or a new engine. I am a tinkerer and frankly if I don't have something torn apart in my garage I feel like something is missing. I have restored a 1975 Gravely tractor and since I own a Land Rover (2001 Disco), I have always had something to tinker with. I thought it was time to move to a motorcycle.
Anyway, the PO didn't want to invest the money to fix so I picked it up off of Craig's List. And thankfully, the mechanic only put it back together hand tight, so it was easy to tear down. First thing I did was buy 4 pistons of eBay (whopping $20 delivered). Some of the rings were shot so I borrowed some from the old pistons. Cleaned up the engine, replaced all the gaskets and lapped the valves. I had a few bent valves, but I "straightened" them with a hammer. I know, I know....
So all back together and it runs. I noticed that cylinder 2 was not running nearly as hot as the others. Checked the carbs, etc. and still nothing. Switched the coils...nothing. So now that I know the engine is OK, I got a used head which has all the valves and 1/2 the miles of the bike. It is at the machine shop right now getting cleaned up and valves checked. I got brand new piston rings and they are installed and waiting for the jug and head to come back from the shop.
I also have a gas leak at carb 2. Turns out the float bowl seam is leaking near the accelerator pump. I have a new #2 carb float bowl on the way.
So that is where I am now. Hopefully, I will have her up and running within the next few weeks. I'm very excited, considering I don't know how to ride (yet) and still need a license.
Here is a pic of what she looked like when I bought it:
