lean pilot jet
« on: July 30, 2006, 11:43:53 AM »
recently switched to pods and 4 into1 exhaust.  Went from 100 main to 120 main with needle on second notch on the rich side.  Bike runs great throughout the range but spits and pops through the carbs at idle, also very sluggish from idle to 1900 rpm.  Turned airscrews all the way in, this helped but problem is still there.  I think i need to put a larger pilot jet in.  How much of an increase in pilot jet size should I expect to make?  Should it be proportional to the main jet increase? ???

Bruce A,

I've got the same set up on my '78 CB550K (4 into 1 & pods). I'm running 125 main jets, I don't know where the needle is set. Bike runs great from 1/4 throttle to WOT. I'm going to upsize the pilot jets as I can't get the bike to idle any faster than 800 rpm and it won't idle consistantly. I also have to be a little heavy on the throttle to get it moving from a stand still.
'78 CB 550K fixer-upper. The bike needs work, I sure don't!

I have the same bike with a similar set-up.  I posted an earlier message summarizing what I did to make my bike run better given the non-stock intake and exhaust set-up I have:

Good luck.
