CB500K2 Starter Bike
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:50:49 PM »
Greetings SOHC4 elite.

Just getting into bikes and looking to get a CB variant. I'm in Los Angeles where prices are pretty high.

I have a lead on a 1973 CB500K2 that is apparently in a 1974 CB550 Four frame. It's been slightly modded already and has some 1st gear slippage issues. Price is around $1,200. Wondering if this is a good starter/project bike? I plan to do most of the work myself or get some stuff done at a local shop for the more complex stuff.

Thanks for any wisdom you can lend!

if its jumping out of any gear give it a wide birth, the gears dont slip per say but jump out,and the cases have to be split to fix it,the 500 had other issues with its clutch release aswell, look for another one.

Two of the best things you can do when looking to buy an old CB are have patience and broaden your search area.  If you wait long enough, something that is pretty much perfect for your needs will come along, and increasing the distance you're willing to drive will exponentially increase your options.  Don't get antsy and feel like you have to buy something just because it's available.  You're in LA.  Somebody is selling exactly what you want for a decent price.  You just have to wait, and have cash ready to go when you find them.

Thanks guys, I'll pass on this one and keep a look out. I'm not really sure what a good deal on a 550 is going to be. Around here it's under $3K which is madness. Would rather spend more and have it run good though.

If you haven't already, try Search Tempest, it can search multiple Craigslist sites at once.
