78 cb750k all balls bearing installation
« on: May 21, 2013, 04:37:41 PM »
Got my tapered bearing kit in the mail, watched and read a bunch of tutorials. Pretty straight forward but need a couple questions cleared up.

1. Seems like everyone uses the small washer on the lower race. I did not measure before removal. I'm assuming all 69-78k would be the same so it would be a safe bet that I would also use the small washer.

2. Bearing, race and dust seals have two different part numbers. Does it matter which goes on the bottom or top? One of the bearings seem taller by a couple mm.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Would rather do this once and right. 8)

The two bearings have different diameters, only one fits to the bottom.

The seal should cover the bearing from the bottom.

Wait, I done only early K's, is the late K really different?

I see the difference now, bearing with the bigger inside diameter goes on the bottom.

Why don't you post a picture of what you got?

From what I remember, there is a thick washer and seal that goes under the bottom bearing.  This bearing is pressed on the stem and errors are not easily repairable.  The fat washer is there to provide clearance between the frame and the bottom bracket.  If you skip it, the bottom bracket (steel) will drag on the frame in turns.  I will not explain how I know this little jewel of info  :)

I cut the old bearing race with dremel and used it to hammer the new bearing on.
