I have a girl and a boy, and clearly, he's the one that needs strangling.  She stays out of my shop, but if something is missing, I can almost always find it in his room.

You all who answered that only had girls don't know squat.

No kids yet but in talking with the wife I am pretty sure she will be the disciplinarian (she thinks she will be too strict  ;D).
Just remember from a former teenager that turned out somewhat OK- it is not easy for your kids either.
Remember back to when you were a teenager and dump all the tech of texting, facespace and other tech timewasters on top of all the other demands on kids these days and I think a lot more is expected of kids these days compared to what we had to deal with.
It ain't easy for them either no matter how much you think it is.

Tagged for reference as my girls are just 3  ::)

Same here.  Only one daughter, though, and a 5 year old boy.  I'm getting worried, too, because she's already starting in with an attitude that I'd expect from a teenager, not a 3 year old!  Listening to stories from my wife about how she acted as a teenager aren't making me feel any better, either. :o

I really do try not to give in to her very often, but she has me wrapped around her little finger.

@Gordon.  I also have 2 boys (10&7) My 10 year old is a good kid, but has his 'i know it all' moments.
my wife treats them all with (two) kid gloves.  i just have one, but its finger-less.  8)
keeping rules and expectations clear, i have found, is the key.  No gray areas.  kids will exploit weakness.
we're talking about this stuff more and more, and i'm getting less "but mom said..." responses, which is nice.
I hear more "go talk to your father" now  ;D

Yeah, like I know what you mean, but you have to set limits
no matter how difficult it is. She'll appreciate when she's older,
but hate you now. She'll get over it, but the guilt is hard to
handle.

I have been floating in a sea of estrogen for 40 years with a wife, daughter and now a grand daughter.  Even our dog was a female.   ::)  Our daughter was fine until she hit 15.  Then all hell broke loose.  Drinking with her friends and lying about where she was etc.  She calmed down for a while after 3 girls she went to school with were murdered by a enraged boyfriend after lying to their folks where they were going.  After high school, the crap started again.  After I had enough, she got the boot.  She dated for a while, finally got married to a nice guy, has a daughter that reminds me of her, has a good job.  We get along great, she has the ability to make me laugh till I have tears in my eyes.  We babysit our 4 year old grand daughter while the parents work for a few hours a day a couple of days a week.  She is finding out what it is to raise a kid.  When she tells me what the kid has been up to, I just smile.

I see now when they get crazy and cold. It looks like it starts around 15 till about late 20's. insanity, existence is futile.  I wouldn't be able to deal with kids, pops and his pop didn't do to good...think I'll probably skip it, have adventures and nice stuff.   but hats off to you folks.

Isn't that a parent's best revenge?  ;D then as a grandparent you can spoil the crap out of your grand kids and send them home. What can your kids say after all the crap they put you through? Of course we all have to reflect back on what we put our parents through as well. It's a vicious cycle.

Our daughter went "alien" when she went off to college. Absolutely NO structure in her life when that happened, and things got very "tough" betwen us for a few years. Then all the sudden one day when she met her future husband her past values came back and all the BS was gone from us and her life. Now we are expecting our first grandchild anyday now. She was due on the 22nd....and I don't know if I should make the first little Honda Pink or Blue:o

You forgot giving them some sugary stuff just before they go home.  Let the parents figure out how to get them off the ceiling.  ;)

I have two daughters both in their mid 20's now. I remember the fist girl being easy until 12 years old. The second girl had a mind of her own since day one, she was difficult to warm up to until maybe she was 4. Since they were only 2 years apart there was some really good times for many years. Even family vacations were great. I couldn't offer them the kinds of things that other parents got there kids, sometimes they would let us know about it but but for the most part they already knew that is TFB because Dad's working his a$$ off and can only do what we can with what we got. When they were 10 and 12 I opened up a small  store in a building that I was rehabing,  they got to run the store on Saturdays. It probably wasn't fair but they did learn how to deal with the public, and made their own money, then figured out how to save for what they wanted to buy. That part stuck with them . they work very hard and can squeeze a penny so tight it make Lincoln cry. But they also know how to shop a deal and get what they want.
Never be afraid to tell them that you love them , never be afraid to explain any situation to them, then ask the what they would do, there is no manual, but they always deserve your love and respect (money isn't either of those things).
Boys will fcuk up everything, they'll hide information from you because they won't know how you will react if you find out that they may like another boy besides you, that kind of scares them . But they do know that there will be some new things that they have heard about that they want to try on this new boy. That scares us as parents... they know that and feel guilty... that in itself makes all kinds of tention  that will eventually come out as anger...it's how we learn to grow up...The kids don't have a manual either, they only know what we teach them and what they hear in school. This is hormones and decision skills being tested and ours too.
My oldest was maybe 15 when there was this boy with a car that was driving her around without me knowing about it. I found out. Told him the next time I see my girl in the car with him  that I would call the police ,tell him my girl was kidnapped off the street by this individual in this kind of car. He looked at me like , you wouldn't do that would you? So I asked him how long it would take at the police station to talk his way out of this?
A year later , I'm walking down the street and his car drive by... there's nobody in it... it's going down main street by itself ???!!  Later I found out my daughter was in the car with all her friends   and they all ducked so's I wouldn't see them in the car. Left an uneasy feeling in me gut so I let him off the hook. Once that happened she lost interest in him.
Girls ain't easy, they never are. But like all women ,you have to constantly reinforce the fact that you love them and that they are the reason that you exist, and that they can have some welcome input on how the way that things are gonna be.  Be there for her and perhaps it won't be as bad as it could be, we only get one shot at this life, everything you do counts,  everything that you don't do can count against you. Good luck Dad.

We got two junior dragsters, at least we knew where they were every saturday night. The youngest was getting not so great grades. I offered to buy her a new spitzer dragster for straight A's. That brilliant move cost me $4,300.  Her christmas list included a polar clutch. Grandma was going to buy it, she thought it was a little purse. No it's a centrifugal racing clutch $600. Lol.
