Front sprocket play / slack
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:55:22 PM »
My front sprocket has a big amount of play in it, is it normal? On the sprocket it says 750 and 17.

The bike is a cb500 the chain has 98 links.
Here is the video:

The front sprocket on my 550 also has a bit more play than I would consider 'normal' or expected, but it doesn't seem to be the source for any problems.  It is an aftermarket sprocket (not sure what brand it is) and I suspect that the center hole was simply broached slightly too large.  With the retainer ring in place, it has a bit less play than without it, does yours as well?

I posted a video with it mounted. It has a great play, that I wouldn't considering normal.

Your sprocket has a lot more play in it than normal...i was surprised when i was changing my chain/sprockets, went with 18 tooth front, but had some play/small amount of wear in the shaft splines, but why does the sprocket not butt up against the bearing....i found this on e bay, now i have the washer and key to keep it tight

That sprocket needs to be cleaned.

When you put on a new sprocket then you will understand
how bad your old sprocket fit.

The sprocket off of my '77 550F project engine is exactly the same, right down to the markings and what seemed like excessive play.

Maybe the excess movement is just normal for a 500/550.

That freakin sprocket is worn out!  Replace both as a set with chain
