Hey all,
Another from Portland here.  I've got a 74 CB750K that I've had for a few years non-running.  Anyways, I just moved back here at the beginning of the summer and finished it up...mostly.  I put a new wiring harness on it and electrical problems have been plaguing me since the beginning of the summer.  I've been through it several times, took it to a backyard shop (Rockabilly Engineering in Milwaukee) and he was able to fix it temporarily.  It would run fine at his place, then the second I take it out for a ride it shorts out and dies.  I've gone on several 30 minute rides on it, replaced most of the electrics and am getting fed up with it.  My question is, who locally would be the best place to take it to fix the electrics.  I just want this thing done, summer has pretty much come and gone with me missing out on the best part.

Should be picking up a cb 550 here in New Orleans soon. Then tossing it in the back of a uhaul with some pinball machines and bringing it up to Portland. Apparently it needs the carbs cleaned out because it has been sitting a while. This going to be my first motorcycle. Can anyone recommend a MSF class in the Portland area?

Yes.  The ones given at PCC Sylvania in Southwest are high quality. :)

Looks like that one will forever be the one that got away. After meeting the guy and checking out the bike, I felt pretty convinced that it was mine, and had $200 to put down on it with me. He said "oh just give it to me when you have it all." He called me a few hours later and told me someone offered him $800 a fair price that I couldnt match, so its gone. But as luck would have it my friend in Portland has cb550k that he is selling that Im going to buy! So what started out as a bummer day when I found out I wasnt getting the gold one, got a lot better when I found my friend was getting rid of his. So I can still join the sohc club.

I was just referred to this thread...see the new members posting area "Howdy from Portland" for photos of the bikes.

Recently picked up a '72 CB500 in sometimes running condition (traded for some stuff). This is my fine ladies bike. We'll be working through the winter on getting it running reliably for her. Next step is to rebuild the carbs w/ some carb kits, then really go through everything.

I ride an '08 Duc Sport Classic but my fondest memories come from being 7 or 8, putting on my gold flaked helmet w/ amber visor and riding on the tank of my dads CB350F from Toutle, WA to Mt. St. Helens. I can, to this day, close my eyes and play back  almost the entire road in my head.

I've owned a '66 CB160 and a 80s CM450T in the past. I really wish I still had that 160.

If you are ever in South Tabor and walk by a little red house with a black Duc or CB500 in the driveway say "hi".

With the weather changing but holding out for now is there going to be a PDX SOHC ride?

I know wouldn't mind meeting all you fine folk. The 500F isn't running yet so I'd be riding my Italian steed by default.

Let's do it before the weather turns on us!

I'm up for it wherever as long as I can take the rear with MX.  I'd probably prefer scenery to speed, though.

I ride in the Eugene area.  I'm looking forward to making my way up to Portland one of these days and cruise the scene with everyone up there.

I'd love to know some good ride routes around the Portland, OR area.  We still have some time here in town before riding is completely ridiculous do to weather and I just got my bike running again.  I've headed east on HWY 14 on the Washington side out to Hood River, came back on 84.  That was nice.  I've done skyline.....it' alright.  I know there are more!  What are they???
Thanks in advance.

Heading south to Salem/Eugene/Albany on 99w is nice once you get past McMinnville.  lots of open road without a ton of traffic, since everyone else is using I-5. Very pretty farm country.

there are a million fun roads up around skyline.. thomson, mcneely, germantown... you can zig zag around up there for hours and still be minutes from downtown where ever you are. i went on a ride out there last week where everyone else had dual sport bikes. we parked by a powerline service road on germantown and took off down a grassy hill on the dual sports. it was really fun.

Skyline never really excited me. Too much traffic to relax. Roads off of Skyline are good though as previously mentioned.

Corbett down through to Bull Run then Marmot is really nice. Can bit a bit technical in some spots but there isn't much traffic either.

East on WA 14 then back on OR 30 is pretty nice.

26 to 47 to 202 to Astoria then back on 4 (Washington) then cross to 30 at Longview makes for a really nice long run. When I've down it there is never much traffic and it's pretty scenic:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Portland,+OR&daddr=Nehalem+Hwy+N%2FOR-47+to:Nehalem+Hwy%2FOR-202+to:Knappton+Ferry+Rd%2FWA-401+to:W+State+Rd+4%2FWA-4+to:Lewis+and+Clark+Bridge%2FOR-433%2FOrchard+Way+to:45.916766,-122.829895+to:I-5+S&hl=en&geocode=%3BFRqovQId_Hyn-A%3BFcaRvgIdCDah-A%3BFcCcwwIdBuqe-A%3BFTRDwgIdyAmk-A%3BFU5yvwIdWLOr-A%3B%3BFcKJtgIdfD-w-A&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=6&sz=10&via=2,3,4,5,6&sll=46.025575,-123.097687&sspn=0.671283,1.042328&ie=UTF8&ll=45.946375,-123.037262&spn=0.672244,1.042328&z=10

Looking at the weather forcast it says 68 degrees this Saturday the 10th.

I'm going to head out and it'd be great if any of you want to join. I have the feeling it's going to be one of the last opportunities for a dry-ish run. I'm willing to go out all day or half the day depending on whatever people want to do. I'm thinking a nice comfortable run, not balls out, with some stops for food/drink.

Maybe meet for a quick breakfast somewhere and kickstands up at around 10 am?

skyline between burnside and germantown is a bust on weekends, but weekdays has much less traffic. past germantown is great, and past cornelius pass even better. i'm down to ride on saturday.

a better astoria route in my opinion is hwy 30 to scappoose, then take scappoose/vernonia hwy to 47, then head to mist and out the 202. also, much better than bull run is larch mountain road. man, that's a fun road but it gets cold already this time of year, as you end up at around 4000 feet at the top.

One of my favorite rides is Marine drive out to the scenic hwy and up larch mountain rd.  As Paul mentioned, it can get cold up there.  I did it just a couple weeks ago and it was much colder than I expected at the top (on a warm day).  The look out makes it worth while though.

Couple of guys and I headed out passed Estacada yesterday.  It was a nice ride.  We had time constrictions so we couldn't go out to far but, it was gorgeous once your get past the burbs.  We'll be doing it again I hope.

Were you the pair I saw going West on SE Divsion as I was heading the other direction? Anyway, saw a couple dudes on some nice mildly Cafe'd older Hondas (I believe). I was on the black Duc heading the other way.

Hmm, if one of those dudes looked freakishly tall atop a 400T Hawk, then I think you spotted my buddy and I.

I was the normally proportioned guy on the 550.

No we weren't on Division yesterday.  On Hawthorne, but not division.
