I'm going on a ride this Saturday if anyone wants to join me; or if some of you folks are already going out and don't mind me tagging along I'd dig it.

I think I'll coffee up at Tiny's between 9 - 10 am if'n you want to meet me there:

1412 Se 12th ave
Portland, OR 97214

{Corner of Hawthorne and 12th}

Not sure what route yet, maybe out to Astoria? Not really sold on any particular route, I just want to get out and go for a nice solid ride.

don't know if i'll be able to go as far as astoria, but i'll try. i could suggest a shorter route but i don't want to discourage you from doing your solid ride.. how about this: burnside to skyline, right on cornell, but cut left on thompson which goes back up to skyline. if we have slower riders, if would give a good detour for the faser riders, and the slower people could just stay on skyline and wait at thompson. right on mcneely (past germantown), which goes down to hwy 30 just before cornelius pass. go back up cornelius pass to skyline, and then head out to scappose where skyline ends. if anyone wants to go for a shorter ride, rock creek hits skyline somewhere on that stretch. otherwise, we could go to scappose, and take scappose/vernonia hwy to 47, then 47 to 26 at forest grove.

this would basically be a fun way to get to vernonia, and if you want to go to mist and on to astoria from there you'd be well on your way. it also provides plenty of catch-up and cool-off spots for those with different paces. it more or less zigzags on and off of skyline for much of the time. hell, for that matter there are more zigzags to add if we wanted.

A shorter route actually sounds good.

Something came up and I will be taking the bike up to Ocean Shores, WA so I'll need to leave Portland at around 2pm for Olympia.

Yeah, let's meet at your shop. 18th and Glisan sounds good. Is there a name to the shop (sorry for being a plebian)?

I personally would like to be on the road by at least 10 am, just so I have time to make it up North.

Let's do it.

11 am is fine. I can always peel off and head North if I start getting pressed for time. It'll be a bit warmer out too.

Ok, I'm a big jerk. After proposing a ride I have to back out. I just don't have enough time to ride this ride then boogie it out to Ocean Shores. I have tons of loose ends to tie up before I'm out on vacation for the next week.

I need more hours in the day.

I'm just watching this, waiting and hoping.  School and work are both keeping me pretty busy right now... so maybe some other time...

Hey! I'm Dave, and I have a Honda....a purple '71 750. I call it Barney cuz it's a purple dinosaur... Lived in Oregon City for about 20 yrs before moving to Burlingame (corner of I-5 and Terwilliger for those who don't know) right next to Multnomah Village. If you guys are tired of the Skyline area, head east out of Oregon City on Beavercreek rd or Redland rd and there are some really good roads and views out that way..or 211 from I-5 @ Woodburn to Estacada..one of my favorites is the Molalla River Corridor. Take 213 south from OC, left on 211, rt on Feyrer Park rd (Feyrer Park is a nice little day park at the corner of Feyrer Park rd and Dickey Prairie rd.), Right on Dickey Prairie and follow it to the end, turn right at the big sign that says Molalla River Corridor. The road follows the river wwaaaayyyy back in, last time I was out there about a month ago, there was virtually NO traffic. In something like 60 miles I only saw one other vehicle. Might want to gas up in Molalla if your gonna do some real exploring. So anyway, if you see a purple 750 with leather bags and a unique chrome sissybar, that'd be me....

yeah, there's some great roads out there... i tend not to go that way, just because i have to ride 30 minutes just to get out of portland, but there are some nice rides out that way for sure. welcome!

Just wondering if any of you ride your bikes year round here in Portland or do most of you put them away for the winter season. I'm fairly new and just curious. Thanks.

i ride year round, but my honda doesn't really like slick environs. i'm really careful two times a year: right now when the leaves are down, wet, and still on the road, and january or so when we get a snow dusting and they cover the road in gravel for a month.

right now i'm down to just it and the BSA, which i hope will be a better winter rider.

If I were to buy new tires, are there any you'd recommend in particular for the rainy season?

i think the avon roadriders are great for all-season. they're pretty sticky, yet last fairly long, but seem to shed water well in the rain even though they are a sporty tread. i'm no tire expert though. I have heard lots of similar reports on them from other riders.

I don't mind riding in the rain, got good raingear and a snowmobile suit if it gets really cold. Back in '81, bought a '72 XS-2 from my (future at the time) wife that I rode daily rain or shine in Sacramento. The rains a bit warmer there. Moved to S. Lake Tahoe in '83 and rode it year round until '88 when we left Tahoe to come here. Didn't ride in the snow but a few times but once the roads were plowed, I'm on it. kinda cool how the water off the road freezes into icicles off the back of your boots like spurs. Don't necessarily have a tire recommendation other than one with good tread and even with a new tire you do need to be careful in places that sand the roads...real good idea to have good gloves too, in case you accidently just barely hardly even touch your front brake going real slow in a corner and find yourself sliding down the road on your palms. Ruined my cheap ones doing that, but saved the skin...And save some money for new turnsignals. They seem to be a lot better about getting the sand off the road around here tho...

wet leaves suck too....I bashed the rt front wheel on my truck into a curb at 20mph and messed up my front end and broke the rt side exhaust manifold...probably wouldn't have damaged a bike much but it would have been a serious mess in the mud on the other side of the curb....

Hello, I recently picked up a 78 cb550k from a friend here in Portland, and very promptly lost the key. I hear Honda didnt use a lot of key codes and sometimes keys work from other bikes, anyone willing to stop by with their key and give it a shot?  Should be from a late 70s model with a plastic topped key.

i've not really had much luck with that particular myth. i probably have a few around though. best bet it to find the key code on the barrel and get a new key. one of the dealers south of here (wilsonville i think?) still has the key cutting tool and can make a new one on the spot. you can also find them online.

I'm not sure how far you are from Washington Square Mall in Beaverton but there is a key place on the corner of Hall and Scholls Ferry that will cut them right there if you have the code. He's in his own little building behind the Chevron station. Kit and I both got some. He just made me some the other day for the '69 scrambler I just bought. It took about 15 seconds. They are usually $10-15/key because those blanks are so hard to come by these days. He's a good guy.  :)

So, I need some help. I'm in bad need of a good Philly cheese steak sandwich. I heard of a place on Sandy at 150something that has good ones and even carries Tastykakes too. Anyone know where I'm talking about? I need a fix or I'm gonna have to stow away in the cargo of a plane and fly to PA. I'm not kidding.

 ;D ;D
