Hello folks, what is the best high gloss, hi temp paint I can use to paint my exhaust with?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge a high gloss / high temp rasttle can paint is the equivalent of unobtainium!

I know there has been lots of debate about if the rattle can paint will even stay on the headers. I haven't tried it yet. But I've got some black (flat) VHT paint that I'm going to give a try in the near future.

I wonder if some of the new brake caliper paints would be of higher gloss and / or hold up better?

500 F is definetly not enough! I've been told that even the 1200 F stuff is questionable to use.

VHT makes one in mat(almost any color) good to 1800'F

Well, I know the headers are by far the hottest part. But how hot is say, the last 2 feet of the exhaust?

MATTE is not FLAT - it looks nice and i for one don't want my pipes to be that noticeable - i mean not exactly the thing on my bike i want to draw attention to...the matte finish has a nice glow to it anyways.

i have taken to keeping a can of it handy where i park the bike along with a clean rag and a couple pieces of cardbord to use as masks

the paint "pings" off in some places up close to the engine and gets scuffed down low, boots, twistys etc...

i just wipe the dust off, mask the area and give it a couple of shots while it's hot. it dries pretty much instantaneously...baked on.

BBQ grill paint.

Well, at the behest of the girlfriend, im doing tank, oil tank, side cover, etc flat black. (she's cool like that).

I thought it would be cool to do the chrome stuff gloss black. Im bobbing the front fender and losing the rear fender.
Would love to have shiny black instead of shiny chrome. Any other suggestions for shiny black that can be on the headers?
If not, what about doing the headers flat black, but the muffler gloss? The muffler is much cooler than the headers, but I dont know if they are 500 degrees. I don't think they are, though.

have you looked at PROTEAL's bike? - his is solid matte...actually so is mine. i always wanted flat until i saw matte...

Yes.
But if your girlfriend says "I like it flat black", and you like it ok, you may as well go with flat. Shes happy, I'm happy, we're all happy

Duplicolor makes a METALCAST paint in "Anodized Smoke". I don't know how hot it'll go. I'm sure it won't hold up to the headers but I think the flat black on the headers and a translucent smoke on the mufflers would be cool.

My experiences: the high temp paint fades fairly quickly on the headers, but will retain fairly good colour and gloss at the cooler end.

I have used Duplicolor Very high temp (1200F) black paint. It worked fine and looked good for about a year or two. It is cheap, easy to use and odds are that in a year two you might want to change things anyway.

A better option might be to get the stuff done with high temp powder coated.

Another idea would be to use that high-temp exhaust header wrap. That will complement the matte/flat black paint job. It can be painted.

If I cant find what i want in paint, I might wrap the haders. I hear it can cause head damage though.. will ahve to do more research.

Matches Smudge, my primer black f100 (which is sitting unused in Arkansas at the moment. 71 302 with 351 high compression heads adn no mufflers. 11 mpg!)

Don't mean to hyjack the thread, but how many feet of that 1" wrap do you think would be needed for our bikes? Namely a '79 CB650. If I did it, I'd wrap it all the way back to the mufflers.

I got two 50'' rolls of the smaller diameter black headerwrap, and wrapped the pipes tight (used allot of it, prob more than I should have), and I had about a foot left on the one roll, and didnt crack open the 2nd one. I only wrapped my headerpipes, and stopped about 6' 'before the actuall mufflers.So I would say you will be fine with one 50'' roll of the 1'' wide stuff, just dont wrap it so close/tight like I did, and u will be fine....

You could tape up the hub and spray the whole thing, then maybe sand off the paint on the spokes for contrast, but who knows how long it will last ? I was gonna do that, but decided to just hold off till winter and do it the right way, which is tear everything down and powdercoat, as it is MUCH more durable and permant than a rattlecan job...And another thing about powdercoating, it won't hold up to high heat applications, such as exhausts. CERAMIC COATING is the way to go for exhausts, and other high temp applicaitons. Most places can do either a silver (that can be plished to almost chrome) , or flat black finishes. Usuall cost is around $100-$200 for a normal sized exhaust.

I agree. At first I wanted a true "flat" paintjob, then I saw the matte and I was sold. The stuff goes on easily, and is thick (due to the enamel/ceramic), and lays very well. I am a huge fan of it, as it looks more glossy at night, then dulls out in the day. Below are two pics (sorry 4 the size) of the same paintjob, and you can kinda see what I mean.

The paint I used was DUPLICOLOR Low Gloss Engine Enamel (if anyone wants to know).

The ceramic makes the paint more durable then reg paint, but makes it a #$%* to sand off, as the enamel clumps/gums/balls up on the sandpaper. But, for a rattle can job, I think it looks pretty sweet..
