Thanks for the thoughts 70CB, I think the next step will be a full tune up, oil change, and figure out this ignition problem. Good excuse to go with Dyna or Hondaman ignition......I think so!

It's on! and you got a great deal. From a quick glimpse, the seat, muffler, tailight and winkers are not stock.

Give it the "3000 mile" tuneup, could be your points or condensor are bad.

So the concensus is they are stock lights? I wasn't sure, and the PO said that he has never seen a tail light like that one (primarily orange). I have gathered that I have Aftermarket exaust, seat, and the rear shocks are Koni. I was planning on a cafe style tail section, but the more I look at my seat the more I like the weathered look. I guess only time will tell what is in store. But first order of business is getting running well. So 3000 mile tune up next....now where do I find parts in Germany?

I would say you got a great deal.

The header looks like standard Super Sport (550F) with an aftermarket muffler (you should look at the VIN, if the bike is an F model it will start with CB550F).

It is important to know if the bike is an F model because the 1977 F (the last year of the F model) uses a different carb than the '77 and '78 K bikes. The 550F uses the same carbs as the '74 - '76 550K's.

The twin front disks are also not stock, and are a common upgrade on cafe bikes. Based on the front mounted calipers they appear to be converted stock 550 forks. The 550 was always single disk, but the lugs for the dual disk setup were present. The conversion is actually kind of a pain, so in my opinion adds a lot of value.

The seat is shaped like a '78 550K, but the smooth cover is not stock.

Those are some seriously ugly front blinkers and rear tail light setup. If German laws allow I would replace both.

This model bike never had a side stand safety switch.  You could waste a good deal of time looking for a problem there.

+1...  ???

but at 500 euro you're getting a really good price.  even in USD that's less than I paid for my 550.  and where i live in the states, bike prices are pretty low!

Thank you very much for the input on the front brakes. I know that they are not stock, but wasn't sure if I was dealing with a 550 front end or I believe I have seen the GLs used on this forum.

And the carb info was HUGE, as I foresee a carb cleaning and rebuild in the future.

And as far as the BEAUTIFUL German blinkers.......they gotta go! Luckily I do not have to worry about German laws for this build because the first time the bike is registered will most likely be in the US. And if it does get registered here, it will be under US regs. So I got that going for me......which is nice!

The GL swap is common, although moreso on 750's than 550's. The GL calipers slide on pins and attached to the back of the fork leg as opposed to the SOHC caplipers that are attched to an arm and are in front of the leg.

I am ashamed to say that while looking for the resources to do the 3000 mile tune up, the 550 was pushed out of the shop on onto the back burner for an after noon



I am proud to say however, that 5 Gallons of American Amber Ale, and 5 Gallons of Belgian White Beer are coming to life! They should be keged in about 3 weeks!



I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, and please take time to reflect on the reason we celebrate this holiday. My thoughts this weekend are with a lot of families of fallen friends.

Thank you for your service to our great country. It's because of the sacrifices of the many service-members that we have the freedom to build our bikes and brew our beer. I hope that we remember everyday (and not just Memorial Day) that there are very brave men and women who continue to fight so we can continue our riding and drinking (but please don't drink and ride).

By the way, awesome build you've go going on. How difficult is it to get parts for a Japanese bike in Germany? In addition to a CB550, I've got a BMW R80 that I'm working on, so maybe you can bring me back some German parts :)

 vma: Thank you for you support, it is truly appreciated. As far parts go, I think they would be fairly easy to find here, I was told (a few posts ago) that Germany was the biggest SOHC market until the US came along. And I am seeing the parts availability to support that. The issue is the language! I am finding it very difficult to go into the nearest part store and find what I need. (It once took my wife and I one hour to figure out which pickles were dill pickles..........and we still got it wrong). The good news? Amazon ships here too! and I have a mitilitary mail box so shipping isn't SO bad so most of my parts I believe will come via online. As far as the BMW goes, when I do find that magical vintage motorcycle graveyard that we are all in search of, I will let you know. I wanted a BMW (bike) but decided on the SOHC for reliablity, ease to work on, and of course I found the 550 first!

TEWS: That is great to hear, I can't wait to see what you do with this one. Your toys are amazing!

While the carb bodies are the same style as the earlier K, the internal jetting was unique to the F model and different from the K models, due to the muffler type change.

The Euro Hondas can have many things different from the US models, though.
