Cb650 spoked wheels
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:17:14 PM »
Is there any compatibility with spoked wheels from say cb550 or 750 and cb650's? I'd like to turf the reverse com stars on the 80 650 I picked up a few months ago, I think a 17" wire wheel on the rear will look nicer than the 16"mag.

Anyone with a cb650 do a mag to wire swap and not use a wire wheel off a cb650? Or am I looking at finding a set off a 650?

Did the 650's ever have spokes mate? Anyway, I'm guessing (because I don't know) that a CB750 K7/8/Auto rear wheel and 1975-77 GL1000 front wheel (with the thinner discs) would come close, you might just need to make some new spacers? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

There were some cb650's that had the spokes, 79-80 models. The cb650 customs had the reverse com stars, which is what's on the 80 that I bought my wife. Just about to get back on it and I'd like to find some spoked wheels, I have a spare set of K7-8 wheels but I know the front disc and rotor are very different but the rear might work out. I do know the rear brake shoes are the same part # for the 650 and the K7-8 so maybe the sprocket carrier etc will swap in, havent got to the measuring stage yet...

I have a set of '80 cb650 std spoke rims if you're interested. They would need a complete and total restoration, but they're still solid! (I even ran them for a short time) If you're not interested, I can get you any measurements or pics you might need.

Thanks, I'm just starting to get familiar with the 650. Will any year of 650 spoked wheel fit? I'm looking locally but have yet to find any spoked wheels, just mags.

@starsnbars89, how much of a rehab are you talking about? Trying to get a set that's ready to go as is.

Though the question wasn't directed to me; yes, any cb650 wheel will fit (including the DOHC models ;) ). Also: '79 models had 17" Comstars if you just wanted size.

You probably don't want mine. I'm talking complete rehab: pull all the spokes, blast down the rims, powdercoat, and get new spokes. The bike sat 20 years so there's some rust and the rims aren't straight/true anymore. Still good wheels for someone looking to resto! Too bad cb650's are easier to find that dog crap! ;D They'll be valuable someday...

@starsnbars89 I'll pass but I might need some measurements at some point, I was looking at pics of my buddy's dohc 1980 cb750 with spoked wheels, the front end, caliper and rotor look identical. I have a feeling it might be my ticket in. Should be easier to track down a set of dohc750 wheels than 650's locally if they're compatible. I'll have to get over to his place and measure things up, fingers crossed.

No problem. If you do need measurements, just ask. I have the rims right here in my garage. I do believe the 750 are the same. The rotors did measure larger on certain models though. I know I checked into CB900 and GL1000 Comstars once and I'm fairly certain (if memory serves me) the front wheels all measured the same (rears were shaft drive of course). Honda liked saving money on tooling. ;)

So I dug through Western Hills Honda's parts fische, 1980 cb650 & 1980 DOHC cb750's spoked wheels share:

front brake caliper
front hub & bearings
front axle

rear hub & bearings
rear axle
rear brake panel

The cb650 std and custom share the same fork lowers, brake disc & caliper, front axle. the only things that dont cross referance between the std & custom are rear sprocket carrier, rear axle.

So I should be able to use a dohc750 front wheel with my cb650c's brakes and axle, 750's rear wheel and brakes but I'm not sure on the sprocket carrier and rear axle and possibly spacers.
