Topic: Top triple clamp D washers

I'm guessing these are under the nuts of the bolts that tighten the clamps at the top of the fork tubes.
Is that correct? Should my 750K5 have them?

They fit into the gap on the clamp like this:






It's notorious for the clamp to crack if you leave them out; good move installing them!

Actually, I don't have them! Bike is new to me, they weren't there when I got it.
I will put some in for sure.

Question though: will the clamp be tight enough with them blocking the squeeze?

Yes it will be tight enough. Plus you have clamping also taking place on the lower tree too. Without them the clamp will break and then you are in a very bad spot. Upper trees not broke are getting few and far between to find.

If yours are missing I would suggest carefully inspecting for cracks in the tree. I'm not sure on the thickness but I imagine someone here has some loose ones to mic and you could use regular washers the same size.

On a thread I posted looking where to buy some recently because these are unavailable now from the dealers,I was reminded that the thickness is very close to the washers that are used under the head nuts on the 750 engines.I compared and they are very close and can be ground and modded to work.
  Saw some for sale once on the web but looked for awhile and could not turn them up again. If you see some out there could you post a link please.

The D washers are only on the top fork tree clamp. None on the lower fork tree clamp.

I believe Hondaman's book says they are .090 thick.

These appear to have been eliminated on 77 & 78 models (both 550 and 750) per parts fiche for some reason.

Anyone know why?

They aren't fitted on my 79 550. No sign of cracks.
I use a torque wrench so they won't be over tightened by me, but I doubt all of the previous owners did.

The are of a different design.Maybe too many were breaking and they made an upgrade.

Thanks for referencing my thread on making your own. IT has thickness dimensions etc. A cyl head nut washer is closest.

Do not make them from standard washers. They are too thin and the bridge will still crack.

At some point, they were discontinued as the bridge was redesigned. Check a micro fishy for your model.

Hmm, looks like my cb500 is missing them as well. Am I reading the fiche right that I only need two on the fork clamps? Or will I need three?

Yes only two one on each side. Where do you think a third one would go?? It is part #9

Wasn't sure if I needed one in the gap on the center clamp (just next to part #18). There's a gap of roughly the same size there as well.
