What exactly are you asking about the speedo ? The red indicatorr in it looks different than the other 3. I had #572, it had braided oil lines..

The only "story" is one that I haven't heard. The owner said there's an interesting story behind it but that will only be told to the buyer. It's not listed for sale anywhere so you wont find an ad or anything of that sort.
Since it's not listed for sale anywhere Hewitt how did you run across it. The 70KO (4/70) I have wasn't listed anywhere either, but my son was talking to his boss one day about old motorcycles and his boss said he had a friend who had a old Honda sitting in his garage. Now it's in my garage ;D

Looks totally legit so far....it has the black, no pointer switch on r/hand control and the carb has long choke arm. (on early sandcasts)

I don't have a specific question besides "are these gauges correct?" I just can't say yes or no myself from the info I have found.

The earlier VIN had smooth oil lines. I'm not sure what the VIN cutoff was so yours may have been replaced.

That is really a low vin. How close is the engine to the frame number ? Be interesting someday for you to look at the bottom of the gas tank and see if it is a 'no dimple' tank. They held a little more gas. There were actualy three different versions of the wrinkle tank. The four dimple tanks were eventually built so as to give the throttle cables more clearance under the tank for less interference.
No one asked yet but it is a good runner and roadworthy as she sits ?

They look correct to me including the short nut on the speedo cable.

I will be picking it up this weekend. It is a runner and driver, although it hasn't been ridden since 1999. The current owner bought it off the original owner in '99 and didn't title/register it because of "the rarity and the original persons ownership/name". I have a feeling that this is where the "story" comes in and the previous owner was a somewhat famous person. I'll find out Saturday though.

The frame number is around 446. And in regards to price: lets just say this isn't a "Suzie found it in her barn and doesn't know the value" kind of bike. I'm paying a lot for it and frankly am thinking now that this may need to go to a museum or true collectors home rather than me, so I may end up selling it sadly.

A few other things that are confirmed: original exhausts with baffles and original bill of sale/receipt and full documentation. I don't know about 28 carbs yet.

Good luck on the purchase and hopefully you won't pay too much for it.

There was a nice one sold on ebay last week for a little of $35,000.
I hope that helps you.
The SOOC has a list of changes over months of production.
If you get this bike for 25k or less you are doing great.
This is a collectors piece.
Bring a BIG friend and maybe some protection if this is going to be a cash deal.

That bike was a little more original, but had a MUCH higher VIN...Low VIN's are a BIG deal with these bikes.

I did see that bike and follow the auction. It was relisted afterward and then ended because the original buyer backed out.

How is that one more original? Also that one didnt run. There are a lot of give and takes!

I feel the combination of low VIN, full documentation, condition, runs, and so on make this one worth a good amount.

Yep if yours is an all original, unrestored surviving example with a very good documentation and history as it sounds like and its very low vin number than I would say its a very rare example and a bike any high end collector would covet.
If you get it bring it over and enter it in the Gilmore Car Museum Bike Show in Richland north of Kazoo and grab a trophy to put with it  ;)

sorry, but screw the museum mentality. It's not zero miles so ride it and enjoy it.

I have serveral low mile bikes that are original, and they all get ridden a few times a year when they come up in the 'rotation'.

No reason you can't put a few hundred miles a year on it and 10 years from now still have a great museum quality bike that you actually got to enjoy.

But it appears you might be looking to just flip it.

I just might have to enter it in a show!

I am not looking to flip it. I'm just thinking that something of this prestige may be better off in a true collection or someone who rides it. I currently have around 20 of these era cbs. The newest bike I have is a '79 cbx.

I think that having "around 20" bikes puts you in the 'collector' category already...just sayin'...
My earlier post about the truth of the story was meant to say, if the seller is telling you that some secret story makes the bike worth more, it doesn't. But from your subsequent posts I think that it's more a situation of someone who knows what they have and is looking to maximize your interest.
But then again, if I saw that bike in person I'd probably wet my pants just a bit and just stare it at while handing over money -  so rather than try to give you advice I'll just say good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the link. I'll keep it in mind and see what my schedule is.

And there have been a few questions about price. I'm not going to say the exact amount but the seller knows the value and I am paying an amount that I don't even know if I'll get my money back if I do sell to a collector. Do I mind that, not at all!

The story behind the bike is that it was bought brand new by James Dean's best friend and was the first cb750 sold in Indiana and possibly the Midwest (although that can't be proven).

I have met the guy who bought the first Sandcast in Wisconsin. Not sure if it was midwest but I'm pretty sure I remember him telling me first in Wisconsin

BTW I hope we can see more pics when you get her home. I would be nerous spending buku bucks for a bike too. Maybe museum is the route.

Buku bucks is very true, but a bike like this is worth what someone will pay... But hey, you only live once and these bikes don't last forever. I am very young to be enjoying these bikes but you just cant beat them. I have confirmed that the seller has the original 1969 plate, bill of sale, title, dealer brochure, and manual. He also has the stock chain/sprocket that the dealer removed. This has also never been restored, rather 100% original. If there's any bike that is a once in a life time opportunity to buy it's this one. The more and more I think about it I feel as though I may sell it to a museum or high end collector. If they choose to ride it then tha is wonderful, but I sure wont be.

A little more on finding it: it was listed for sale on Craigslist last week believe it or not. I caught it within minutes of the ad being posted, emailed him, and then minutes later the ad was flagged for removal (typical Craigslist). I was the only one to email on it before the ad was removed. The current owner bought it in Indian in 1999 and it has been stored since.

You're right it's a great opportunity to buy a fantastic bike.  From the pictures it looks better than the one from ebay last week.  Ultra low vin like this is a big plus as previously mentioned.  You won't loose money on this one.  Just hold on to it and see it appreciate and if you need cash you can always sell it to me.   :)
