A lot of the first 1000 were sold up and down the west coast...I think though, some well known dealers had a little more pull ordering early, than the small dealers. One dealer in Alberta. Sold at least six, two went back to BC. He still has his, put a hundred K on it in the first 5 years or so.  I think, 3 of the first 1000 showed up within a 125 mile circle from here, and a motor in the 260 range was found on Vancouver Island . I think there is a low number one in an Egli, down in that area..

Some very low ones are here in Ontario as well.  I've been trying to contact a Honda rep from the era to confirm but have been unsuccessful.

Just curious to see what you guys value this bike at considering one was on ebay last week for $35,000. It's one that's worth what someone is willing to pay, but we will never know that amount until it sells on the open market.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it actually ended up selling for $33,000.  It was pretty nice but I think the consesus was it had some minor issures.  Based on that, and that "yours" is in better condition and lower VIN and one that sold for $42,000 a few years back, I would say it could hit $40,000.
Oops, I should have said $20,000 and then offered you $25,000 for it.  ::)
I would love to get one like that but the odds are obviously slim.  I'm really jealous but also happy for you because you appreciate what it is.

That is true. I was in touch with the seller and it sold to a museum in ND. That bike had a few dents, didn't run, and didn't have this documentation or low VIN. I guess we'll find out when this one goes up for sale! I have decided I will pick it up, make sure it is what it is said to be, post eye candy for you guys, and then put it up for sale. It does deserve to go to a collector or museum. Or someone who will ride it and not be paranoid to do so. Someone has already said they don't understand bikes that aren't ridden and collected. When you spend $40,000 on a bike and ride it then I'll respect that!

Also, some of the listings of VIN changes I have found say that the ON-OFF-ON on the switch was added at VIN number 442. This bike is 446 and doesn't have it, so is this something that should be noted/changed on the lists?

Man. I have nothing to contribute to this at all but dang, what an interesting read!! I don't even think I've seen a sandcast k0 in person but it will be intriguing to see where it ends up. What a great backstory, my own bike is not historically significant by any means but I've always wished I could know where all it's been, whether or not James Dean's best friend owned it. What if you could find photos of him with his friend riding your bike, how cool would THAT be!!!  8) 8) 8) Cheers for owning a rich piece of history.

In for pics. My pops has a lot of photos from the Dean era. Part of my family is from the gas city area and were rodders. I'll shoot my Dad an email with a pic and have him dig through his archive and maybe ask some friends. If you find out the guys name that might make it easier too.

Those photo's might be a bit hard to find, seeing as how James Dean died in 1955. ;)

Welp.....

Need to brush up on my high-profile actor history apparently, in that case that would be one rare photo!

I have asked for the fellows name though since you never know if your family knows this guy or not! I have asked to see if there are any pictures of the owner with Dean and then himself with the bike. That would at least be cool to have.

I just might have to enter it in a show!

I am not looking to flip it. I'm just thinking that something of this prestige may be better off in a true collection or someone who rides it. I currently have around 20 of these era cbs. The newest bike I have is a '79 cbx.
You're new here, so you don't know the cardinal rule is to share pictures. ;D We have a few CBX fans here as well.

I am not seeing that celebrity angle affecting the value at all..

But if you must Know a member named Dennis on here... Will read this eventually ..He. Sold sandcasts and KO,s at a hi volume dealership in LA.

And one day was riding and at a light a guy on a Triumph asked if he could swap bikes for a ride.. He said sure.. It was Steve McQueen..

It's not letting me post pictures off my phone for some reason.

But due to "large hail and strong winds" I won't be picking it up today. It has been postponed to tomorrow.

Would any people close to the Ann Arbor/Detroit area like to meet with me and join me to get the bike? You get to see the bike and I get some back up!

I agree. James Dean's friend adds no value to the bike, but it is good to know the story of the bike.
