oem floats or sci aftermarket?
« on: May 29, 2013, 06:01:06 PM »
oem floats from Honda for my 77K are $45 each vs the $14 aftermarket ones in stock from SCI, anyone have any experience with the $14 ones? I have no problem buying oem if they are better but if sci's are fine I rather save the money. Any feedback would be nice.

These will be for my 77k and a spare set off a 78, so PD41's & 42's

Why did you have to replace floats? Very rare.

Rarely does something go wrong with these black floats. I think it would be wise to get the ones from Harisuluv. I really can not think of anything going wrong with them unless the hinge area is mangled beyond repair. Or for some reason you just want to say you have new ones. What ever floats your boat. ;) :D

The brass ones can have a problem with ethanol. I have seen this in other applications.  The solder used to seal them deteriorates and you are stuck chasing a fuel problem

Good information. But does not apply to this post. 77-78 have the black floats. They are solid and some type of plastic. They can never get gas logged.

After fighting with float levels and leaking carbs at the end of last season it was the float tab being worn that was the issue. I've cleaned and rebuilt everything else in them, I have a leaky float bowl gasket or mixture screw o-ring and need to address that and I figured I'd put new floats in And re set float levels while the carbs are off. Then everything is new and I'm at a level playing field, if I have to spend the money on new oem I will, but if SCI's aftermarket is good quality I'll go that route. I just want new not used, I already have a spare set of used.

From your posts I kind of feel like I know what you want or are looking for. You need new OEM Honda floats.

Do yourself a favor off the bike make a carb rack bench holder to mount the carbs then you can setup the carbs. and completely check out there function other than the finale vac. sync so you don't have to keep taking them on and off trust me on this. If you need a pic I will dig one up. It is just some 2x4s so you can get them level side to side and front to back and tilt them for checking float height and fuel level. Makes it easy to set the floats.

I built one last year, it was such a huge help. It has two shelfs on the rack, PDs sit on the edge of one and the mikunis off my kz sit on the other. I ran through everything were clean as a whistle, new jets, new orings, new gaskets, accelerator pump sprays strong, new float needles, floats set to the proper bight and with the carb at the right angle. Timing was just set staticaly and with a light as well as a proper sync.just have to fix the little drip drip and new floats and they'll be sorted out. Next is my wet weather rough running issue...

Wet weather running issue is probably tied to a non existent or trashed point cover gasket. Also could be water getting in where the spark plug cap attaches to the lead. Not snug anymore so water gets in. Trim the wire. For the point gasket make one out of those gasket maker rolls at auto parts place, super cheap and easy

Also about the floats. Though it seems like you are on your path now, how are these floats "wearing?" Maybe just dress the tang with a fine file and check for evenness of the two floats to each other.

^^^ new plug boots, trimmed the wires, cut a new points cover gasket and have a new grommet where the points plate wires go through the case, the only thing I haven't done is replace the plug wires which I'll be doing this weekend. It's like it's running on 3 cyl when it's pissing wet and I'm letting off the throttle. On the throttle its back to normal, so maybe the plug wires or some electrical connection is getting wet somewhere. Once the rain stops and things dry out or when it's not raining the bike runs and idles super smooth.

One thing I did was quit using the oem cork gasket. I took the cover off cleaned it good and ran a small bead of silicon on the cover not the engine Let it cure over night it stays on. You don't see many cork gaskets any more.

New OEM is not always the best but some guys are brain washed into think so, it can be like cloth branding :) Gotta have the reebox running shoes and they have to come from the official store!

Exactly, hence my original question of: anyone have any opinions on SCI's aftermarket floats? Or should I buy oem Honda? Sometimes oem is just better, sometimes aftermarket is just as good at a fraction of the price. I've learned with carbs that oem orings and gaskets are usually the best, but if the aftermarket floats are fine I'd be happier spending $56 than $160. So, has anyone used the floats from SCI or from Cb750 Supply?

Honesty I'm only replacing the ones I have because I'll be pulling the carbs to run through the small leak on the number 1 carb bowl, I already sorted through the tab ware on the floats last fall. The tab had a dimple worn into it from the float needle, this dimple wasn't allowing the new needle to seat properly. When I filed the dimples off the needle seated and I was able to set the floats properly.

I just want to put new floats in now and don't want to spend the money on oem if I don't have to.

Great idea ken on the silicon on the inside of the points cover, I ended up cutting a new gasket out of a sheet of waterproof gasket material. Smeared a light coat of greas on the area the gasket would sit on the points cover. That held it in place nicely when I screwed the cover down, for good measure I put a small oring around the two points cover screw in case water was getting in there. Hopefully new plug wires cure the wet running problem, cause I live in the PNW  and I rains a lot round here.
