Cycle-X Super Sidewinder Fitment
« on: March 21, 2013, 07:55:23 AM »
Received my new pipes from Cycle-X and the fitment is horrible. Especially on cylinder #1. I am sure that someone else has experienced this before so just looking for some tips on how to wrangle into conformance. Some fitment photos after the install would be great also, just to be able to judge whether I'm close or not.

Are there any rear brake issues hitting top of the exhaust?

BTW, this is on 1972 CB750.

You will not be able to turn right without scraping them either. Those are for the DOHC 750s I do believe

They are listed under SOHC on their site and the description states "Fits both SOHC and DOHC bikes".

I found this article someone wrote and there are photos there of the same exact issue I am having (half way down the page) - http://gnarlywrench.blogspot.com/2012/01/cycle-x-super-sidewinder-on-joeys-k3.html

I've e-mailed Cycle-X for advice but just wanted to see if this is a common thing.

Note: We have taken a photo of a stock Honda with the Sidewinder installed.
These systems were designed for Honda DOHC 's, but we use them on SOHC's.
Give a call, we will tell you how to mount them.

maybe give them a call as they suggest  ;D

No luck getting in touch with Cycle-x so giving a little bump for one last try.
I can't be the only one with that exhaust.

If it fits the SOHC and DOHC then you WILL have fitment issues. I was running a stock 80 DOHC exhaust on my 76 and you have issues near the footpegs with the mufflers and kickstand issues

The bikes have diff frames and placement for kickstand and such so if it fits one it MAY fit the other but will fit like crap on one of them

I also bought one of these pipes from Ken a while back, vitually no fitment issues on a K8, also no clearance turning right, scraped all the time . The pipe worked very well and was probably the most power producing thing I bolted on. No baffle, way too loud, used one out of an old Kerker and it was still a nice power producing pipe.

Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Yep , forgot to mention that I had no center stand, had to fab a mount to the foot peg.

It scrapes in normal street traffic? I've leaned the bike over to check for clearance and I did not notice that it was that low to the ground to easily scrape. On the track, I can see that I guess.

Fabing a rear mount is not a problem, just need to see the best way to mate it to the engine.
Still have not heard back from Cycle-X ...  ::)

Finally had some time to try and install this a couple of days ago and the only problem was the lip that goes into cylinder #1 is a bit too big. If you look closely, you can notice it and all I did was grind it down to the same size as other and it was easy from there. It took some pulling and adjust but by all means it was not hard at all. After it was bolted it didn't seem like it needed a rear mount but I made one anyway. Just in case anyone else runs in to the same thing.

You can kinda see the rear mount.

EDIT: I can't even remember how many times I've called CycleX and left my number and never got a call back. Even called several times after 4PM when I was told (Ken?) usually talk to people.

You can kinda see the rear mount.
