Alternator oil gallery?
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:51:00 PM »
Took the bike out today for a good long ride - it's been leaking a little oil all spring, but today I think I can definitively say its going from 'the alternator'... or should I say, the oil gallery behind the alternator.

It was time to change the oil anyways (engine break in) so I pulled the little oil gallery plug out, the O-ring was tight and seems to be in good shape, however it's still leaking. I'm pretty sure the leak has to do with the alternator cover not applying enough pressure onto the plug itself, looks like the bolts were in the wrong spot, therefore not seating all the way. I cleaned everything up and made sure everything will fit tight now... hopefully that fixes the leak.

If it doesn't... can't a guy just JB Weld that thing shut? Or maybe find a new o-ring I guess. What is the point of that oil gallery other than to cause me grief?
