the rd 400 has a longer stroke than the 250 so is not a straight swap

I think the finished product would be a BLAST  ;D ! even with the extra required machine work.

Just get the 400....
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

yes that is the answer , the 400 cases and crank are different and you cant put the 400 crank in the 250 . you can fit the earlier 350 cylinders though .

The 400 is exactly the same as the 250 as far as I know. Same frame etc..
I'm not a fan of Yams in general but I rode a turquoise 400 for a few months and loved it to bits.

That's a Nice 1st year 73' Stev-o !I bought one slightly used from a guy in 1974 who liked shopping our local Dealer for new Yamaha's every time he felt like it along w/ his dad who had a gold TX750.
That was my 1st FAST bike after I got my full license when I turned 17 & I made sure to test the limits of handling on the factory  :o Dunlops.I was reading too many cycle mag road tests.I installed a pair of K81's later & loved'em.

Thanks gr.  It needs tires and I plan to put the K81's on there.  The engine side covers are a little beat up, plan to have them powder coated too.  It's a screamer...

Stev-o,
Did you do a top end job on it yet? or clean out the carbon from the rings, etc. yet ?? If & when you do I know a little trick to the transfer port windows on the stock pistons to give just a little more boost while still running stock Everything else..,& she'll pull to 9500 even w/ stock exhaust W/ safe running using the O.E. oil pump.

No, bought it as a non-runner about 8 months ago and got it running in March.

Stev-o,
If you use Quality injection oil it'll take a LOT to make it blow !

Had business in Houston today and checked out CL for any possible bargains I could pick up while I was there.

This RD400 caught my eye but didn't have enough spending money on me to pick it up...

Strange advertising it as an RD400 when the only thing RD about it is the frame, I would call it a YDS350 cafe racer, nice looking bike though.
