1978 CB750 Back on the road after a drop..
« on: June 02, 2013, 03:28:58 AM »
OK... I just put my cb750 back on the road and I have a question for you guys.

Part of the work done was replacing the alternator cover and I want to make sure that the alternator is working ok.
With a fresh battery the bike starts and drives great but I wanted to make sure that my alternator is working ok.
I was under the impression that if I disconnect the battery when the bike is running it should go on running with out  a problem, am I wrong.

Basically what is the best way to confirm that the alternator is working ok and putting out what it should?

as always thank you in advance.

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals, start it up and watch the reading. It should be> than 13V by 3000 rpm, and get to a maximum of 14.5 or so beyond that.

Make sure the battery is fully charged first.

No battery=no current to field coil=no juice from alternator=no run

I would NOT disconnect the battery while running.  Some bikes can have BAD things happen to the electrics with out the battery in the circuit.  That said,  I cannot say for sure it would hurt your bike.  The manual has the method to check output of the AC.  The bike needs to be running to check output and these Hondas need the battery to run.

generally, no, the bike will not run if you disconnect the battery. It completes the circuit from the alternator to the rest of the bike.

Do what Brewsky describes to test that it is charging properly.
