Just finished my GS1000 project and went to take it for a ride. Hit the starter, and get 1 click out of the rectifier (yes the rectifier) and nothing happens. No power at the solenoid. WTF!!!

Well I own a GS1000 so I suppose I'm "It" mate, the only weak point with old GS bikes is the electrics, usually fixed by replacing the stator and rec/reg with a new one.
If you're not aware of The GS Resources yet, it's the biggest and best GS forum in the free world, and an excellent "resource" (pardon the pun) for GS info.
If you're not a member yet, sign up, you won't be sorry. Cheers, Terry.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My rebuilt starter had been powder coated so heavily it would not ground. Problem solved!!

There you go mate, but why would anyone powdercoat a starter motor anyway? I mean, it's got a cover over it, yeah? Cheers, Terry.
