Late-model 750 carbs on '74 550?
« on: June 01, 2013, 06:46:51 AM »
Searching the forum, I have not found a definitive answer to the question of putting 750 carbs on a 550. I have come to consider mismatched parts to be normal -- my goofy '75 550K came from the PO with PD46A carbs from a later 550, and it wears a late-'76 rockerbox.  No problems after three seasons' riding.

So, in a fit of optimism, I bought a set of PD41 carbs, apparently from a late 750, hoping they'd function on the '74 550 I acquired last week.  They are intact and appear to be functional -- can PD41As work on the 550 motor?

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride. . .

I came across a couple of posts from Two Tired, the ultimate authority about 550s.  Apparently there will be notable problems with such a combination.  To complicate things further, the seller now assures me that he cut-and-pasted the ad copy from a posting he put up for 750 parts, that the PD41A designation is incorrect, and that the carbs did come from a 1977 CB550K.

The PD carbs on my running 550 just say "PD", without a number.  I will compare the inlet and outlet dimensions with my current PDs when the new ones arrive.
