Need help or where to start
« on: July 29, 2006, 03:30:39 PM »
Heres the story.....go to work today and bike tips over in the parking lot onto the leftside. Nothing is bent or damaged. After I swear a couple of times, I ride it home (about 10 miles). Everything is fine on the ride home. Just went to take it for another ride and it won't shift out of first. The bike is a 1975 cb750f. Any ideas or things to check without opening the case. The clutch seems to work perfect.

I'm sure more experianced owners will have more/better tips but you might see if shift lever is bent and also look to see if the shaft it connects to is straight...

Good luck!

If you rode it home OK did you notice if it was harder to shift than normal ???

If it was operating normally then I think I would check a few things externally first.

Try and get the bike out of first gear, put it on the centrestand (if you have one) and rotate the rear wheel by hand in forward and or backward rotation and try and lift the shifter to Neutral..will it do this??

Is the shifter also pressed up against the  engine cover?

During the ride home it shifted just fine. I also pulled the clutch in and started the bike in first gear. After started I rode it up and down the street trying to get it to shift - no luck. Also the shifter is not against the cover. It exactly moves up and down the normal amount. Just nothing happens.

I think that the gearbox is locked, possibly by the gear selector being bent somehow from the fall, or a spring has broken in behind your shifter cover.... not allowing the bike to be moved fom first gear..
take the shifter and cover off - not a big deal only a few screws... but do not break the gasket behind the cover... have a look for a spring that attaches to the shifter lever.. a photo of this area would be a great help, plus one of the cover/shifter before you start...

anyone else have any ideas??

Just falling over cant bend anything inside the box. Its probably the light spring on the shifter mechanism under the caver the shifter shaft sticks out of and is pure coincidence.

Thanks, Today i took the cover off and found a spring sitting the the bottom. The spring found its way back into the proper location and everything is back to normal. My only question - is this the stock spring. It seems like it shouldn't fall that easy. pics are below.

That is a fairly common occurrence anytime the shift lever takes a hit.

That was with no cleaning. Overall the bike is pretty dirty. I bought it about a month ago and have been dealing with the mechanical stuff instead of the looks (other than its new army green paint job).
