Picked up the sandcast today... Never been so happy
« on: June 02, 2013, 06:09:23 PM »
*All pictures posted on page 2*

As many of you saw, I posted about a sandcast that I was going to purchase and posted a few photos as well as asked questions. Well I picked her up today. I was joined by Vincent (member on here DJ_AX) who happened to live just a mile away. Thanks again Vincent. I have been asked to post pictures so here some are.

It turned out to be far better and safer than I expected. The seller was a very very nice gentleman. To add some info: I was given the original license plate, a yearbook photo from 8th grade showing the owner with James Dean, the original manual, the original brochure with the dealers name on it, the original receipt/invoice, photos from its home from 1969-1999, and finally the original title from 1969. It's safe to say this bike is documented.

On to the photos of her with her new friends:

Is your membership now valid over on the Sandie site ? Looking forward to heading over there as a lurker to check out your thread if you do one. If your bike is as original and unmolested as it looks its important to document its unique features etc to add to the database on these early machines.  Congrats and enjoy your turn of its ownership.

Runs and drives perfect. All electronics work from the blinkers to the brake light. I'm getting goose bumps typing this... Time to go back out in the garage and stare!

I will post to the sandcast forum now and document items that are original to this VIN.

Somebody needs to put out a shout out to DJ for helping. Looks like you hauled that in the back of a pick-up truck. Its works but a trailer is so much easier and safer, bet his spinster was a little tight helping you get that on and off.   ;D

Have you decided if you are going to find a museum for it?

I do have a trailer (open) and use that often, however, I felt safer with the pickup truck route (believe it or not). There are a few reasons for it 1) if it rained even slightly then the wheels would have kicked road grime into the bike 2) I was paranoid about rock chips 3) I wanted to minimize every single risk of getting in an accident and having a trailer in traffic was a large worry 4) it's a brand new trailer and in great shape but all I could think was a tire blowing or it swinging about or some other worse case scenario. Trust me, there were 5 of us to load it and 5 to unload it. I wasn't taking chances.

And yes, DJ was great. I hadn't met him before but he turned out to be just a mile away from the destination. As soon as I got to the neighborhood it was evident I wouldn't be having any issue and that was confirmed when I met the seller, so DJ's security job turned into gawker and photographer. He really was a great guy and wonderful help. Couldn't thank you enough! As we left we were next to each other (DJ on his cb) at a light with me with the "dear god I just bought a sandcast" face and DJ with the "I just rode my 750 and had a great time" face. I loved every second of it

Wow, beautiful!  Feel free to take a bunch of pics and post em.  Would love to see a lot more of it.  Sorry, I have to go back in the older posts... but was that the original paint, or has it been repainted?    (nice collection of bikes as well ;D)

Nice score. Sometimes collecters loan bikes to certain museums..they end up fully insured, safe dry storage, and appreciated by many....
Then a few times a year or a few months you take it out and use it, and have fun with it..

Those are only a few of many. I'll have a photoshoot day tomorrow and provide some eye candy. That cbx is VIN 196. I bought it and then a few days later looked at the VIN on the title. I was in for a nice surprise!

In regards to the holy grail comment. As I was loading it up the guy said "this is the holy grail of the bike that started it all." So true

Herc's is gone, they changed names and owner a year or 2 ago.  I use to go there all the time with my whole family in the 80's when my grandparents where still around.  I drive behind it all the time, Hines Drive goes right behind it.
