On the freeway wondering why there's gas in my boot...
« on: May 29, 2013, 09:16:15 PM »
Hmm...
I smell gas.
Wonder why my ankle feels cold?
Uh-oh...

The two little screws that secure the petcock face plate had backed off allowing gas to seep past the ball and onto my leg. A few minutes more an the valve guts would have been bouncing down the freeway and would have made a nice torch.

No wonder my mileage has sucked lately!

Go check those screws!!

Hey, I've done that! :D
It reminded me that I forgot to tighten the screws on my new petcock washer, ruined my date, too. :(

hot exhaust will not ignite gasoline...unless that exhaust is flaming...

I have seen it happen.
Outside air temp is a factor too.
Near the engine the exhaust tubes can be very hot.

Just like a skillet can catch fire on an electric burner. No flame but the burner
can still ignite a flammable liquid.

The gas would need to be in vapor phase with sufficient vapor density to catch fire and the heat source or ambient temperature would need to be at the autoignition temp of gasoline in the absence of a flame or spark. Autoignition of petrol is about 475-536 degrees F.
Flammable liquids in liquid form do not combust.

Wasn't there a member on here who posted a thread about his bike bursting into flames as he was riding it?

yep,  I remember and he even had a video of his bike going up in flames.   I once got to work and everyone said what is that smell, smells like gas.  Well, it was me, I had a pinhole in the tank right over the left spark plug of my GL500 and the liquid blew back on my pant leg.  I stunk and thankfully did not immolate...Larry

Bought a really nice Antares Red 76' tank off Ebay recently. The guy swore it was good to go. It had little rust inside, well what rust was there, was deep, at the weld on the perimeter edge bottom on the lower kickstand side. I rode with that tank for 3 days, no problem. 4th day, I made it to work, but as soon as I shut it down it was pouring out. Got right back on and rode home home 10 miles. Scared the Hell out of me. POR-15 works. I used the complete treatment. That stuff is really hard when it sets up.

was riding dirt bikes as a kid, trying to keep up with my dad on some intense trail.  My jeans were a little tight, and after a little while, they started to irritate my nether regions.  In no time, I had the worst burning sensation of my life.  Smelled like the bike was runningba little rich. That was ho I learned that tighter isn't better.  I had over-tightened the plastic gas cap and gas was pouring down the tank and soaking my underwear.  I didn't feel right for several days.

I had the same thing happen and wound up having to be treated for burns. I was almost at the end of the enduro when I felt that same burning, my skin was raw ???  Hurt like heck for days...Larry
